We used to cook with green peppers a lot, and I know my parents told me not to eat the seeds. They admit this much. But they deny ever telling me that the seeds were POISONOUS or SO HOT THEY WILL BURN YOUR THROAT. I am *sure* they said one or the other.
My dad told me if I swallowed watermelon or apple seeds that plants would grow in my stomach. I thought that was so cool that I swallowed a bunch of seeds just to see it work. How disappointed I was when this didn't come to, erm, fruition.
I was once told that pregant women were fat because they ate w watermelon seed. For about three years I went around telling all the pregnant women I saw that they should stop eating watermelons
Most people are farmilar with the belief that if they swallowed a watermelon seed, a watermelon would grow in their stomach. I took it a step further when I was little, thinking *whatever* I ate would grow inside of me. Apples made apple trees, lettuce made "lettuce trees" - the best argument was steak would make a cow.
Okay, alot of kids believed the whole "swallowing watermelon seeds will cause a watermelon tree to grow inside you" thing, but I took this a little farther. When I first heard of this, I hadn't quite figured out what death was, and I had this idea of time being infinite. My reasoning went like this: Suppose that there is a "last day." But then what about the next day? There is no last day! So even if the chances of me swallowing watermelon seeds today are very small, what about tomorrow? Or the day after that? Or the day after that? I thought it was inevitable that eventually, I would swallow watermelon seeds, and I definitely would have a watermelon tree growing inside me at some point or another, and this idea scared me, alot! As you can see, I was thinking way too much!
I believed that if I ate watermelon seeds, watermelons would grow in my stomach and squeeze their way out of my belly button, so I tried inserting the seeds directly into my belly button instead of swallowing them. To my great disappointment I never grew any watermelons :(
I was always eating watermelon seeds. My family told me that I was going to grow a watermelon patch in my stomach. I told them that the body acid would kill it first! Then I started to grow and was worried it it really was growing with me!
When I was little, I was told by a friend that the seeds in peppers are deadly poisonous. I'm 25, and know better, but still pick out every single one. It takes a while to prepare a stir-fry.
When I was little my mom told me not to swallow watermelon seeds or I would grow a watermelon in my belly - for years when I would see a pregnant woman I believed she had swallowed the seds!
My nan once told me that if you swallowed a watermelon seed, one would grow inside you. I did that one day when I was about 6 and I had never been so scared in my life. Even after everyone told me it couldnt happen, I was still wary of them until I was about 16
I used to believe that if you swallowed a watermelon seed or any seed that you would turn into a tree or a vine, then Jack from Jack and the Bean Stalk would chop you down.
When i was young, Maybe 4, my older brother told me if i planted the seeds on top of Cheeseburgers, a Cheeseburger tree would grow. Needless to say, after weeks of watering and tending, my Cheeseburger tree never sprouted.
One day when I was about 6 my older brother, 11 at the time, saw me eating an orange and noticed I was eating some of the smaller, softer seeds that were in the orange.
He told me a story about our cousin that had been eating oranges like that and had to be rushed to the hospital when they discovered an orange blossom in his ear!
For a while after that I could not eat oranges until my mom started buy naval oranges. And I spread the story until someone at school pointed out my foolery!
I used to think that if I planted popcorn kernels I could grow a popcorn tree
I was told by my brother that if I swallowed the seeds of a watermelon, that I would start to grow a watermelon in my stomach, with a bit of help: "Just make sure you don't swallow any dirt!"
I stayed as far away as I could from bare patches of dirt.
I used to believe that if you put pumpkin seeds in the oven the results would be pumpkin pie. When I shared this with the neighbor children their mother was quick to correct me after she had cleaned out an oven full of pumpkin seeds.
asa child - I never really knew what sesame seeds were, so every time I ate a roll with these seeds on them, I thought that they were dried tomato 'pips'. Can you imagine someone sitting drying out the seeds of tomatoes to put on top of rolls?!
My parents once told me that if i ate the black seeds in watermelons, i would choke on them and i would be unconcious for hours until a watermelon grew in my throat and then they would have to take me to the hospital to they could cut my throat open and take the watermelon out...then the doctors would eat it...i accidentaly swallowed one once when i was about 6...i wouldnt stop crying. :)
When I was 4, I used to be a huge fan of the Nickelodeon show Rugrats. There's an episode were Angelica tells Chuckie that if he swallows a watermelon seed, it would grow inside him and he would blow up. This scared the crap out of me, so I stayed as far from watermelon as possible. Looking back I realize what a naive little girl I was!
When I was about 7 or 8, my sister (7 years older than me) convinced me that the pips in strawberry jam where little insect eggs that would hatch and grow inside me.
I have since discovered that she just liked the strawberry jam herself and didn't want me to eat it all.
Sisters!
