Being from NC, my parents always listened to country music. There was an old Travis Tritt song that went..." I smell T-R-O-U-B-L-E." My younger sister thought it was " I spilled tea all ove you, Billy."
When I was growing up I loved The Police (the band, that is ;) and I still do. Unfortunately I didn't buy the album "Ghost in the Machine" until several years after I started listening to it. Alas, I thought I was listening to the song "Too much sh*t for measure", but I was really listening to "Too much information". I'm a big Sting fan, but I'll put money down if you can tell the difference today!
Sincere apologies for the expletive, but if you listen to the song, you'll understand how real this "misheard" example is.
I thought the song "Swing low, Sweet chariot" went:
"Sweet n'low, sweet Harriet"
I thought they meant some girl Harriet was as sweet as sweet n'low. Man, was I dissapointed when I found out the right lyrics.
In the song "Dream a little dream of me", there's a line that goes, "birds singing in the sycamore trees, dream a little dream of me"... My roommate and I were listening to this song last night and I asked her if she knew what a sycamore tree was, and she told me that I misheard the lyrics and that line actually went: "birds singing in the sake of more trees"....
Well, I was quite convinced by her that it was me who misheard the lyrics, ha!
When I was growing up I loved to listen to my parents' Pointer Sisters cassette. But the song, "Jump" always threw me, I thought for sure she was saying, "If you want me my kiss is in the night stand" I still had no idea what she was saying until I looked it up a couple weeks ago.
I only found out today that the line in the bon jovi song Always goes
'It's nothing but some feelings this old dog kicked up.'
I've always though he said 'It's nothing but some feelings, this old time kid up' And now I know why it never seemed to make any sence.
I used to think that Prince's "Raspberry Beret" was actually "Mad-Miracle Man"
When I was little I heard "The 12 Days of Christmas" and I thougt the line,"a partridge in a pear tree" was, "a partra jennapear tree". I always wanted to know what kind of tree that was. Also, when my mother was little she heard "who wrote the book of love" as, "who wroter the moo cow now".
It's weird how it makes sense at the time and only seems silly in retrospect
I used to beleive that in Macy Gray's song "I Try" the chorus was "I try to say goodbye and I choke, Try to walk away and I stumble, Though I try to hide it, it's clear, I blow bubbles when you are not near" , and it used to sing it that way all the time. Now that I think about it, it sounds absolutely insane, but it sounded right at the time. I took me a few months to figure out that it was "My world crumbles when you are not there".
I used to believe, until I was in my late 30's that on the song "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones that the first line said "Tired of Living is easy to do" and FINALLY learned that it says "Childhood livng is easy to do". OBVIOUSLY the first version makes absolutely no sense. What a dope and how embarrasing this was while I was belting it out at concerts and in the car at the top of my lungs!!!!!!!!!!
I thought in the song Two More Years by Bloc Party They were singing Doom on You. Which is a friend of mine's favourite expression.
I felt a bit silly when I realised.
We use to have to sing that song "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" in elementary school. It troubled me everytime, because I swore that the song said "My Body Lies Over the Ocean." It's really kind of scared me.
While driving in the car with my friend a couple of years ago, "Play the Funky Music, White Boy." was playing, but I was always under the impression the it was "Play that Funky Music, Wise Guy." Ya, I've never been able to live it down she till laughs about it until this day.
I used to believe that the lyric "here I am, stuck in the middle with you" was actually "here I am, stuck in the middle OF you" That conjured up an unusual and quite scary image of someone who had become stuck while having sex and couldn't get free.
When I was little I thought that Kenny Rogers was saying,"You picked a fine to leave me Lucille. I've got four hundred children and the crops in the field." I figured he was right to be mad...she left him with a ton of kids! (It is actually, I've got four hungry children.)
I used to think that the song "Just like white winged dove" by Stevie Nicks was "Just like the white window"
On the song Freestyler when it goes 'Yeah-straight from the top of my dome' I used to think it was 'Cheesestring at the top of my door' I wandered what it was on about!
In Louis' Armstrongs Version of "What A Wonderful World" It says:
I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see ’em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue..... clouds of white
Bright blessed days....dark sacred nights
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.
but i thought it said:
I see trees of green........ red noses too
I see ’em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue..... clouds of kites
Bright geussed days....the dogs say goodnight
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.
lol!
I thought that in the song "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani it said "i'm not in no Hall of Fat Girls" when it really says "i'm no hollaback girl". I figured out my mistake when I found out what the name of the song was and realized thats what it had been saying all along.
This is the belief of my friend and her sister when they were younger. They thought the The Cher song, Gypsies tramps and theives was, cheese cheese ham and peas!!! Hahahahah.
