When I was little my Dad told me Japanese people work hard and eat raw fish called sushi. I imagined a man pulling a wriggling fish out of the ocean and biting right into it. I thought the Japanese must work so hard they have no time to cook the fish!

When I was a kid, my mom told me that there were snakes under the turbans that male Muslims put on their head. I didn't have the guts to look at them when I learned that.

When I was very young, about 4 years old, I believed that I lived in the "United Skates of America". I really loved roller skating at the time..

I saw a Public Service Announcement on TV saying that "All Aliens need to register at their local Immigration office by December 31st." I ran to my mom and said, "Mom, there are ALIENS on Earth! They just said so on TV!" I was a little frightened, but also a little excited. Wouldn't it be cool to have some little green person, or Mr. Spock, or Uncle Martin living on your block? Then mom explained that people from other countries living here were also called "aliens." Well, I guessed that would be cool, too...though not *quite* as exciting as having a spaceman for a neighbor.

I found my mother's "Alien" card when I was 5 years old. I actually believed my mom was an alien, until I finally asked her and she explained that she was an immigrant.

When I was younger, my family was in the military and moved around between countries. Thus, we always had passports.

It wasn't until high school that I learned that passports are not required by citizens until they leave the country. I'd always thought everyone had a passport from the day they were born.

I used to believe the reason my latina mother was so dark compared to me was because she drank coffee. Years later I learned it was because my father was white that I was so pale.
Probably why I like coffee so much now lol

When I was young I used to read a comic called The Dandy.

One strip was called the Jocks & The Geordies.

It was easy to see that the Jocks were Scots because they wore big Tam O' Shanters & liked to say stuff like "Jings" when they were surprised.

The Geordies all wore smart school uniforms & spoke plain English, so I assumed they were posh English kids & Geordie was a Scottish slang word for such a person.

My Dad was surprised when I started to use Geordie in this context & had to explain it actually meant someone from Newcastle, which is a fairly unposh place.

I used to believe that mexican babies were born when a black person and a white person had a baby together. I don't know where I got that idea since I am half mexican and neither of my parents are black. Oh well. Heres to being a kid.

I used to believe that the stereotypical politeness of Far Eastern Asia was because everyone there knew martial arts. Logically, you would never be rude to anyone in case they'd kick your ass.
