I live in the city of christchurch (New Zealand) The nearby hills are a part of what is known as Banks Peninsula, and Christchurch is in the Province of Canterbury. This part of NewZealand is very flat geographicaly and referred to as the Canterbury plains.The local weather forcast always started as follows....For Christchurch, Banks Peninsula and "the plains" until midnight tonight......My interpratation as a young child? I knew I lived in cristchurch, knew the hills were banks peninsula, and was very satisfied thinking that midnight was when "the planes" stopped flying at the airport

My Mum used to believe that an aeroplane went up into the air and waited for the world to turn around so the place they wanted to go to was beneath the plane!

I was sitting in a plane once and convinced myself that if I looked hard enough at the clouds that I would be able to see the angels playing on the clouds.

I grew up in a smaller city and had no idea what a skyscraper was (you know, the tall buildings, like in New York). I always thought that white trail the planes left in the sky were skyscrapers because it looked like they had scraped the sky!

My neighbour's 20-years-older-than-she brother had her convinced completely that when sunlight glinted off aeroplanes, that meant all of the glass windows of the plane had just burst, and the glass would fall down directly into her eyes. I thought she was daft when she solenmly told me this (I was 6 and she was 8), and I was astonished the first evening I played with her outside, a plane flew over and was caught in the light of the setting sun, glittering off its windows, and she threw herself facedown to the ground in hysterics, believing the glass was heading in her direction to blind her.

I used to believe (until very recently!), that in an airline safety demonstration when they said "the inflatable exit slides can also be used as floatation devices in the event of a water landing", that they helped keep the plane afloat!

My sister believed that travel plug adaptors (the things you have to make your electrical appliancies work overseas) were used for breathing through when on an aircraft...weird!

One day at the beach in Boston when I was 6 or so, I asked my dad what kind of plane was making the stripe way high up in the sky. He told me that it was a B52 bomber carrying nukes to protect America. Thinking all contrails were made by B52s, I became and remained a very nervous kid until high school.

when i was younger we used to go on an aeroplane to visit our cousins. i had always believed that because they lived south of us, that they were on another level, ie below us. it never made sense to me that when we were in the aeroplane, we didnt fly down, and i never saw those other levels go past in the aeroplane!!!

Because, when I was six, I travelled by aeroplane from Rochester to Jersey, changing planes at Southend, I used to believe that Southend was in the sky.

Once, Mother told me that when she was very little, she thought EVERYBODY had an airplane hangar in their backyards! The reason? Her father (my grandpa) was a crop-duster and had his own plane.
Grandpa still talks about his crop-dusting days with great fondness and it is amazing just hearing him tell stories: "I got so much chemicals in my system from back then that every mosquito dies whenever it lands on me!" His third wife, my step-grandmother, still has considerable trouble believing this oddity!

The trails that aeroplanes leave across the sky are obviously created by pilots leaning out of the windows holding a piece of chalk, so they know where they've been. That's what I was told anyway.

I used to believe that airplane pilots drove really fast down the runways just to show off and have fun before taking off.
My neighbor convinced me that if an airplane or a helicopter landed in our garden, my house would be blown away. Needless to say I was terrified of airplanes??
