In rural Essex at about age 10, I had a girlfriend who would do anything with me, but the 'deed' itself. Her Mum had told her that once inserted, my 'thing' would touch her kidneys and she would die. The sex ed program at my elementary school taught us in 5th grade that you could get diseases from having sex - like AIDS - as well as getting pregnant. However, I somehow assumed that you could get AIDS from having sex with ANYONE - whether or not they had the HIV virus! I wondered why anyone would want to do something so dangerous.

When I was five, I asked my Sunday school teacher to define "fornication". She said it meant to use bad words. I believed her until I was a thirteen when my classmate were talking about a woman who had fornicated and therefore had sinned. I said I didn't think saying bad words should be considered a sin. They looked at me as though I were crazy and explained the concept. I still went to the dictionary to find out for sure.

My weird childhood ideas about sex came from a book about baby-making that was supposed to clear things up. From looking at the pictures I figured out that the man must have to squish his penis into the woman's vagina using his fingers (I knew what a penis looked like, but I hadn't heard of an erection). After that they would just lay still in the bed, smiling with their eyes half closed, staring at their genitals until they fell asleep or got bored, I guess. It all seemed kind of creepy.

One time, I was at a friend's house when her parents weren't home. She had a TiVo and said she recorded Sex And The City on it and wanted to show me a funny part. In it, one of the main characters called someone up and asked if they wanted to "wrestle". We spent at least a half hour watching the clip of her and him "wrestling" trying to decided whether she was training for a match or if it was fun. We decided she didn't like it because she was screaming so much.


Also, after that she told me that that lady was going to get HIV. I didn't know what that was, and when I asked she told me it was disease you got from having sex too much that killed you. I was so scared, because I thought "having sex" was kissing someone, and I had kissed boys before! I thought I was going to die for a week.
