We had a male cat that wasn't neutered. I thought his testicles were just the cat version of a butt.

A close friend of mine grew up thinking that crane flies were just male mosquitoes (and that all actual mosquitoes were thus the females). This was apparently a widespread misconception where she grew up!

I used to believe a gnat was an animal similar to a goat, probably because of the similarity in their names when written out.

My Sister Cindy Once Believed That If She Kissed A Frog She Would Turn Into A Frog Too!
I Told Her That Will Never Work

When I was in High School, a friend told me that they got a Distemper shot for their dog so he wouldn't be " crabby".It seem think that she had no idea that Distemper is an infectious flu like disease and had nothing to do with behavior.I guess the "temper" part confused her.

When I was a kid, I read in a magazine about how you could, if you were patient and gentle, get wild birds to trust you enough to eat out of your hands. It seemed extremely simple, so I was determined to get the birds near my house to trust me. I knew exactly what I would do once I gained their trust, too: I would catch all the birds in big nets and open up my own pet store, where I would become rich by selling people pet birds. Somehow, the birds never trusted me, and my business projections never got off the ground...

My Sister Lucy Used To Believe That She Could Shrink To The Size Of An Ant. She Wanted To Shrink So She Could Live In An Anthill. I Told Her She Can't Do That!

I used to think the smoke detector went off when there weren't enough "smoke-peckers" around. They were little mosquito-like bugs who lived in every house and pecked away all the smoke before the "beeper" could go off. I was friends with the one at my house. He had a baby sister and he didn't like getting wet in the bath.

When I was in the second grade a friend had a dog called an American Eskimo, a tiny little toy size weighing maybe ten pounds. I didn't understand that the American Eskimo was actually a Spitz, not the kind of Eskimo dog that pulls sleds and id a lot bigger. My friend was also confused and thought her dog was a real Eskimo sled dog so we were amazed that these tiny dogd could work like that.We decided the explanation was that the Eskimos must use huge teams of ten pound huskies to do thr job, I always imagined maybe 100 tiny dogs hitched up to a sled.I only figured out the truth when the teacher showed us a video still very confused as to why the little dogs were also called Eskimo.Only as an adult did I learn that the little dogs were actually spitz from Germany and they changed the name during the war.I can still re my silly image of 100 tiny dogs pulling a huge load thru the icr and snow!

As a youngster and under the misdirection of a manipulative older sibling, I believed dogs were all boys and cats were all girls. If a cat and dog had a family, the litter would be a mix of boy puppies and girl kittens. A couple of years later my sister shook my world by pointing out next door's dog was female!

When I was a child, I had a deep routed fear of giant mutant spiders breaking through my cieling and killing me in my sleep. This was triggered by watching the movie "Eight Legged Freaks."

When I was young my parents took us on a cruise. We were going snorkeling but I have always been terrified of the ocean. I was terrified that the hammerhead sharks below were going to hurt me when my dad told me that hammerheads were vegetarians. I have always believed everything my dad said as true. It wasn't until I was in my twenties that I realized that he had lied. The sad thing is I believed it so wholeheartedly I had been telling people that same thing for years. Now all the weird looks make sense to me.

Until I was 24 years old, I believed the missing "link" in the chain of evolution was the name of an animal they were looking for, as in they were looking for the animal "Lynk".
