Not so much a belief, but an assumption. We used to drive the same route to go camping and along one road was a farm with a signpost out front. The top one said RABBITS FOR SALE and the one below it said FRESH EGGS. I always assumed the eggs were rabbit eggs. I was about 14 before it dawned on me that the eggs were chicken eggs.

When I was a child I was smarter then my parents, so my parents were embarrassed because I knew much they didn't and they stopped telling me things. So, until the age of about eight I thought that the dogs were the boys and the cats were the girls.

When I was little, people told me to watch out for the undertow when I was on the beach. I thought they said 'undertoad' so whenever I went to the beach I always got scared and thought that a giant toad lived in the ocean and would suck me underwater.

I used to believe…

mum told us that if you stepped on an ant you go to hell. Once i opened a jar of jam & realised an ant got decaptitated in the process that was feeding off the lid & was well scared.

I used to believe that each night when I went to sleep two giant daddy long legs spiders (who also bore a striking resemblance to snufalufagus hid in our furnace room and just waited to come out and stare at us as we slept.

At home when I was bored, my mother would tell me to go outside and lay on the ground because I might be able to see Pegasus, the mythological Greek flying horse. So I'd lay out in the yard all day looking up at the sky for Pegasus and being very quiet so not to scare him away. I just knew he'd fly by at any time.

As a child with nothing to do, my mother would give me a salt shaker and tell me if I could put salt on a bird's tail, I could catch it. I spent many days running around trying to put salt on a bird's tail and never succeeded.

I used to believe as a child that cats were the girls (since they were kinda prissy and feminine) and dogs were the boys (since they were kinda rough and tuff) and if they had babies cats were born for the female sex and dogs were born for the male sex.

When I was a child I used to believe that if I told a lie a special bird would report me to my mum..so when I was telling a lie I used to look to sky and hide from that bird:))

I used to believe that jellyfish changed colors, because the two places where I could see them had tanks with lights that changed color. It never dawned on me until years later, that all the the jellyfish and the water changed the same color at the same time.

I used to believe that the cats were the girls and the dogs were the boys. I also thought that the cat was the princess and the dog was the prince. So, I thought the dogs were the daddies and the cats were the mommies.

When I was little I was trying to catch a squirrel and my mom said that they were bad for you to touch. I spent many years thinking that squirrels were covered in a deadly poison and you would drop dead if you touched one.

I thought that some animals had just been "invented" recently (like within the last 50 years or so)

I used to believe that the whole chickens - that you buy for a sunday roasts - used to walk around like that and real chickens were a completely different animal
