One night I had a dream that a moth landed on my head and my skull caved in. I was CONVINCED this was a sign from someone/something that it would happen. I would run screaming the other way when I saw a moth or a butterfly...I'm still very scared of them.

When we were little, my sister told me that my pajamas were made out of caterpillars--and I believed it for years!

I used to believe that a butterfly and a moth were the exact same thing. I thought they stayed at butterflies in the daytime and transformed into the moth pattern when it became night time.

When I was little, I was playing outside and something got under my shirt and I ran in the house crying. My mom located the bug, which turned out to be a grasshopper......I didn't want to go outside again as I thought the same thing might happen.....in fact, I told my mom that I wouldn't even go out in the winter time. When she asked why, I told her that there would be "snowhoppers"!! Mom laughed, I didn't think it was so funny!

As far back as I can remember my dad used to tell me spiders can jump off walls and bite you. I am still terrified of spiders now. Even though you dont get deadly ones in the UK!

As a child i used to believe that if you put a tube of cardboard on the soil in the garden and listened the swirling sounds you could hear were the sounds of worms moving around in the earth.

I thought there were decapitated snakes heads in the sand at the beach which would bite me and kill me if I stepped them. I also thought they would chase after me. I wondered why so many silly people cut the heads off snakes at the beach when they knew how deadly they would become.

My dad told me once that holes in rocks on the beach were made by 'rock worms'. Years later when I was about 11 I mentioned something about rock worms, and my family found it rather amusing.

I used to believe that earthworms came down from the sky in the rain because they always appeared after a rain fall.

I have always loved nature and from a very early age was read books about animals from all over the world. When I was about five years old I rode my little 16" bicycle down the quarter mile long lane of our farm. In the middle of this quarter mile journey toward the end of the lane nearest the road and away from the house, I saw a snake crossing the road. It was about two or three feet long. When I reached the end of the lane I was terrified because I was certain this was a "baby" snake and that its mother, a 30'(at least) python was lurking in the ditch on the side of the lane. I sat there at the end of the lane for a long time. I thought at least I was lucky and had not run over the baby and made the "mom" python mad. I decided on a plan and screwed up my courage enough to get on my bike and race back down the lane as fast as I could pedal that little bike. I raced into the house and related my brush with death to my mother only to find out that pythons did not live in Iowa they live on another continent. I was both relieved and chagrined

When I was little, my sister told me that if a cockroach bit me, I would get cancer and die. After that, whenever a cockroach was found in our house, I would pretend to be sick to make my parents take me to the doctor's.

When I was 3 years old I was playing Mad Libs with my aunt who was around 12, my brother who was 9, and my sister who was 5. While I was laughing hysterically at the funny story we created I didn't notice that I sat on a moth. It was one of those white moths with the black dots that are all over the place, and it had landed on a chair a few seconds before I plopped down. My aunt noticed it, and told me. I felt bad about killing it, but even worse when my aunt proceeded to tell me about the moth.

She said his name was Booga Booga and if someone killed him that person would be cursed forever. I of course believed this and was terrified.
That day as I was running around the corner on my street I tripped and fell, cutting my knee. A few days later it happened again in the same exact spot. Later, when I was old enough to ride a bike, skate, and ride a scooter I would always end up falling at that corner. I was sure it was Booga Booga's curse.

A few years later I moved to an apartment that had a balcony. We lived on the lower level so the balcony was only a few feet off the ground. My sister and I were on it one day and one of those white moths landed on the railing. I was still scared to death of them, so I warned my sister not to hurt Booga Booga. My sister was older, so she no longer believed in Booga Booga. To prove it wasn't true she killed the moth. A few minutes later she fell off the balcony!! That was all the proof we needed. After that we never went near one of those moths again. I still will not kill one to this day and I am now 20 years old.

As a kid in I think 5th-6th grade, I was already scared of spiders, but after reading a book with lots of information about them, I no longer feared having a web spun in my throat. However, I learned about an Australian spider called the funnel web that was supposed to be as deadly as a black widow. The book said if it bites you, you turn blue and then die within three days. Because of this, whenever I visited my aunt and uncle, I was constantly afraid for my life because there were funnel-shaped webs scattered around the lawn. Of course, they live in Montana, in the US, pretty far from Australia...
