There was a part of the furnace you could look into and see bluish flames. I think it might have been gas flames. Anyway, I thought that was hell.

My grandfather used to tell me that if you ever ran over the vacuum's electrical cord while vacuuming you'd get electrocuted and die. For the longest time when I was helping around the house I'd get nervous while vacuuming and thinking that if I let my attention slip for one second, I'd be dead. Eventually I reasoned that this was probably a minor concern back when vacuums first came out and that I had little to worry about but I still don't ever run over the cord.
When I was about 2 or 3 and my mom would run the vacuum cleaner, I would hum along at what I thought to be the exact pitch. She used to tell me that if I hit matched it exactly, the vacuum would blow up. To this day, when I hear a vacuum, I hum along, but think of that and smile.
My grandfather used to tell me there was a little man named Yahootie that lived in the refridgerator and turned the light on when we opened the door. I always used to wonder how he could survive the cold.
I used to believe that there was some sort of monster living under my bed and that he would go out only at night. I used to throw lots of pillows under my bed so it would stay there and its big purple hand would not come out to pick me. This lasted until I was 20 years old!!!!!!
When I was in grade two or three, me and my friends were convinced all mirrors led to disneyland. Unfortunately, they were all closed for repairs when we tried to get in.
On that subject, my best friend told me that her mom lived on the great wall of China when I was in grade one. I belived her and asked her if I could go visit her many times. The answer was always "No, she's to busy" or somthing like that. So Then I told her MY Mom lived on the Efil Tower, but there was no Getting that past her!
I used to believe…
a giant spider lived under my bed and when my grandmother was asleep he would creep up to the foot of our bed. i could see his eyes watching me and he was going to reach out and touch me on the foot. i could not scream or move. finally i could move a little finger. then i was able to move, but the fear would go away..
I'm not sure this should go here, but when I was little I didn't really have imaginary friends, (Mom insists I had one named "Dolphin Girl," but I don't remember that,) instead I had imaginary enemies...
They were some sort of purple gloop monsters, I think I saw one on T.V. once while I was at my aunt's house one night and it stuck. They lived in my basement and if I happened to be jumpy or nervous that day, they would be down there plotting to kill me or something. I would always be scared to go down there because I was sure that if I just turned around quick enough I'd spot one trying to get me!
There was one who came in later on, though, who wasn't exactly a goop monster. I don't really know what he was, but I'd imagine that he had a crush on me and would convince the others not to kill me. It was kind of fun, actually... Once I pretended that the Pokemon in my cousin's Pokemon Blue game would pop out and defend me, too! It didn't last very long though, because I had to give the game back to her...
I've long since learned that they don't exist, of course, but to this day I'm still a little scared of our cold, dark, HUGE basement with the light switches all over the place...
When I was little my mother told me that if I stayed in the tub too long I would turn into a prune, and I believed her entirely, I thought that the purpleish wrinkled skin would continue to progress and that I would spend the rest of my life in the pantry. This also made me think that eating prunes was cannabalism, which I knew about from my grandfather's tall tales (that I didn't know were tall tales).

I used to believe there was a portal to hell behind my full length mirror, so I would always lean it against the wall so I could see behind it.
When i was about 4 or 5 i had watched the movie "Peter Pan" for the first time ever. I was very scared of the alligator in that movie. and i had nightmares that it would eat me instead of captainhook....after having that dream for the 2nd time i started believing that the alligator lived under my bed and that when i would go 2 get on my bed i had to jump to keep the alligator from grabbing one of my legs. I also thought that when the lights were off he could get me even easier so i never slept with my arms hanging off the side of my bed and would sleep right next to the wall. I beleivedthisfor about 3 years & i finally figured out that ther were no alligators under my bed.
I think that if you look in the mirror and then you turn around again really fast then you will see your self with the scarest face ever
My friends and their kids stayed over a couple of weeks ago. Their 5 year old is afraid of monsters in the closet. Well, I sleep in my closet because it is a walk-in the size of a bedroom (in a studio apt.). We were getting ready for bed and he said that he couldn't sleep there because there were monsters in my closet. I told him there were no monsters because I sleep in there and there is nothing scarier than me!
When I was younger, my brother told me that if I added a little bit of salt to the water in the bathtub, sharks and whales would appear and eat me up. I believed this until I was about 10. Sad, I know.
I was not a smart kid.

I used to believe that switching the light on and off was morse code to burglars
When I was like four of five, I used to beleive that if I stayed in the bath long enough, I would turn into a elephant. It is because you get all wrinkly. To get me out of the bath, my mom would always say "oh, I see a trunk!" and I would jump out crying
In first grade, my class discussed fire safety and what to do if a fire starts in your home. One kid asked, "What if you don't get out of your house when there is a fire?" The teacher replied, "The firefighters would turn your room upside down looking for you." Well, I interpreted this literally. I envisioned a scuba-tank-looking pump that firefighters would hook up outside of your room, fill the space around the room with air, push a button, and voila, your room would literally turn upside down. That way, all of the furniture would fall to the ground and the firefighter would find you.
When I was younger, I used to think there was an alligator under my bed, but was nocturnal. I was a messy kid, and my bedroom was always cluttered.. so there was plenty of junk under there. If I ever needed anything and couldn't find it, I made sure to look under my bed during the DAY- a sunshiny day- or the alligator might think it's night and wake up and eat me. Also like any other kid with some sort of monster under the bed- I made sure to keep all limbs from hanging off the edge of the bed... or else I'd wake up the next morning without it.
I used to believe…
