Mamy, many years ago when i was little, you could buy new heads for yard brushes that came with two holes drilled in them, to accomodate the broom shaft in different positions. My Father told me the other hole was to put a candle in, so you could sweep up at night! I think i was about 14 before i realised that the candle would blow out as soon as you moved the broom .. D'Oh !

When my parents would say something about "wasting power" when I'd leave a light or something on, I thought that we only had a limited amount of power to use, and when we used it all up, there would be no more electricity for the whole house. I thought this also had something to do with the numbers on the electric meter, and that we would run out of power when the meter got to all 9's.

When we were children we somehow believed that we could dig tunnels under our house. Not only did we think that we could accomplish this, but we thought we could connect our tunnels to our cousin's house in a different state. We were so excited for the time when we could simply walk through the tunnel to their house in a short time instead of having to drive 6 or 7 hours.
We spent an entire summer working on this project and never got beyond a three foot hole.

When I was about four years old, I had a morbid fear of the electrical outlets. I believed that they skittered around on the walls like cockroaches after the lights went out, and if they got too close they would try to tie up unsuspecting people in their electrical cords.

I went through a phase of paranoia, believing my parents had installed secret cameras behind my mirror and all around the house to watch me when they left me home alone. So, I would tend to stay in one room and not do very much. It kept me out of trouble anyway!

I thought neighbours from the upper floor were holding our lamps all the time and that's why they were hanging from the ceiling and not falling down.

I used to believe that the dust at the top of doors was highly poisonous and could kill you.

In order to make me more careful when using the kettle, my mum told me that if the water didn't cover the pipes in the bottom, or went over the 'full' mark, or the outside was wet - the kettle would explode
I was terrified of boiling the kettle and used to spend half an hour double checking all these things, then flick the switch and run out of the kitchen with my hands over my head just in case

I used to believe that there was an actual monster in my dryer stealing all the mismatched socks. It was a front-loading dryer, and I reasoned that there must be some kind of door at the back. It actually gave me nightmares for a while! The weirdest part is, I don't remeber anyone ever telling me that there was a monster that stole socks, although I heard people joke about it later on in life.

My daughter had been raised in a rural area with water from our well. If there was no electricity to run the pumps, there was no running water in the house. She never made the connection that this was a "mountain thing" until she went to UCLA. There was a power outage on campus, and she remarked, "Oh darn, I wanted to take a shower".

I used to share a bunk bed with my older sister, and we would always fight for the top bunk. One day my sister told me that the heaviest person was supposed to sleep on the top. She showed me the warning tag that was attached to the frame, knowing I couldn't read, and started making up what it said. For years after, I would tell all my friends about how the heavier one of us had to sleep on top, instead of bottom.

we had a good few people who would call our house and we would just let the answer machine get it. i always thought that they could hear me, why not i could hear them, so i would stand completely still and not say a word every time the answer machine got it. (sometimes i still do)

when i was little my older sister told me that if you open your eyes in the dark you would immediately go blind. for the longest time when we played hide and seek i would only hide in light places (horrible hide and seek strategy) and when i finally worked up the courage i would hide in dark places but keep my eyes squeezed shut really tight until she found me. i didnt open my eyes in the dark until i was about 13

When I was 9 years old, I asked for an amethyst necklace for Christmas. (I still believed in Santa) My older sister got jealous so she told me that gold was colored the way it was because people peed on silver. I never wore the necklace again and still have an aversion to yellow gold.

I got in trouble when I was little for taking the 'flat' batteries out of the garbage because they were clearly still round.

I, to this day, believe that when I can't sleep at night it means I'm awake in someone else's dreams...

I used to believe that when you bought a house, the people who owned that house had to move into yours. It used to amaze me that so many people could find someone else that wanted to swap houses with them. It wasn't until I was about 11 that I realised that wasn't how it worked

I used to lie on my back and look at the ceiling thinking that it formed the ground of a parallel, upside down, world.I thought that one day I might be able to step into that world.
