I used to believe…

when I was a small girl, I had the bad habit of picking my nose. I simply detested having bogeys in my nose, so I'd always pick them out. My mother, quite horrified at this once snapped at me: if you keep picking your nose, your nostrils will stretch and become huge. look what you have done to them already! I instantly stopped, terrified. I have big nostrils, was it my own fault?

When I was a kid, I used to believe that smoking "hurt" - that it burned your lips and lungs because you were breathing in really really hot air. This was after the first time I saw someone smoking - my eyes went really wide because I saw the person inhale, and saw the end of the cigarette burn bright red. I pointed and asked "Doesn't that hurt?" before being shushed by my mom.

I believed that one was born with a perfect sphere of booger-material at the top of each nostril. Each nose-picking whittled away at these spheres. I don't remember whether or not I thought these spheres served any purpose, but I recall lying on the floor at nap-time in pre-school with my finger up my nose thinking I'd have to pace myself if I wanted any left when I became an adult.

I used to believe that while I was sucking my thumb I could make it taste like anything that I could imagine, if I just thought hard enough. I remember sitting in front of the TV watching Saturday morning cartoons, with my blanket in my lap, sucking my thumb and how it made my spit taste wonderfully like orange juice and chocolate and black cherry jello and all the other nice things I could think of. It was an incredible epiphany and I felt very powerful. I started to wonder if I could do other things that way too, like flying or turning invisible.

I could hardly wait for my parents to wake up so that I could astonish them with my discovery. It would change the world -- if everyone realized this was possible, no one would have to starve to death ever again. They could just be perfectly happy by sucking their own thumb.

My mom bought this bad-tasting clear nail polish to make me stop biting my nails. I asked how it was supposed to get me to stop and she told me it was poison and it would kill me if I tasted it. I accidentally bit my nails in the middle of the night and sat up all night, crying, waiting to die. I still bite my nails.

I used to believe that if you picked your nose, your nostrills would become very large. That was why certain people had gigantic nostrills- they never listened to their parents and stopped picking their noses.

I used to believe…

My mother used to tell me that if I didn't stop sucking my thumb it would turn green. I don't think I believed her and I didn't think it sounded so bad anyway. One night when I was maybe 2 years old, my mother snuck in my room and painted my thumb green with food coloring. I can still remember looking at it when I was sitting outside on my swing. I wasn't particularly upset about it and I think I put it in my mouth one more time just to make sure...but it just didn't seem right after that. My mother said I never sucked my thumb again from that day on.

My Mum told me that if you picked your nose you would turn into a matchstick man - I didn't believe her until one night,I did it and I stood in front of the bathroom mirror screaming "I don't want to be a matchstick man"

My mom used to smoke, and I'd see her ash into the ash tray. One day I got curious and asked her if there was a button on the cigarette that makes the ash fall off. She told me yes but you can't see it. I believed this till about age 10!

I used to believe…

My mother told me that if I bit my nails
the pieces would make holes in my stomach. I would stop for a while but pretty soon I would run to my mother and say" Feel my stomach. Are there any holes?" and she would know I was biting again.

I regularly picked my nose and ate the bogeys. One day, when I was about 6, I was sick and threw up in the toilet, half of the vomit went on the toilet seat. The vomit was a greeny-yellow colour and looked just like bogeys. I honestly believed that years of eating my bogeys had finally made me sick, and that I had just thrown up all the bogeys I had ever eaten. I never ate my bogeys after that.

When I was 4 I was caught biting my nails. My babysitter told me that if I swallowed enough of my fingernails that they would turn in to little worms and that I would poop them out. she also added that if there was enough of them they would eat me from the inside out. I can remember always checking the toilet for worms. It stopped me from biting for a while, but soon after I realized as long as I didnt eat my nails I was safe. I still bite my nails to this day.
