My daughter used to bite her fingernails. Nothing I did would make her stop. One day I found a picture of the Venus de Milo and told her that she'd end up like that if she kept biting her nails. Unfortunately, that didn't work for very long either.

I used to use an old trailer at my grandparents' house as a playhouse. Once my aunt came over to 'visit' and, playing hostess, I brought her an ashtray. "Oh, I don't smoke" she said. "You don't?" I asked, incredulous. I was about 3 or 4 and because my parents and many of my relatives smoked, I thought all adults smoked!

When I was little, my Mothjer told me that if I chewed my nails, they would grow and grow in my stomach. You'd think this would have put me off, but I have never had unbitten nails - and I'm now 41!!

When I was little my Mom used to read the Enquirer and she told me that she read that a little boy died from eating his nails and when they did the autopsy, they found his stomach full of undigested nail fragments!

When I was about 3 or 4 my mom told me if I suck my thumb I will wake up one day and it will taste really bad since it will start rotting and will soon fall off if I keep sucking it. I awoke one morning with an awful burning. Drinking water only made it hotter. Mom told me it was starting to rot. I never sucked it again. I now know it hot pepper she put on me.

Everybody in my family used to tell me that if I kept sucking my thumb, it would shrink and all that would be left is a tiny little nub. From that day on until I was about 10, I compared my thumbs every morning.
