I used to believe…

my big brother told me that if you pick your nose too much, it turns your eyes inside out and you would only be able to see inside your own head

I used to believe that when people smoked they must be blowing on then end, which was why it glowed red. Someone even gave me a pipe at some point and I tried blowing into that. I couldn't work out why anyone bothered it didn't seem to do anything.

I used to believe…

My uncle had lost his thumb in world war 2. We told my brother (a thumb-sucker until 13) that my uncle had sucked his thumb so much it just dropped off one day.

I used to believe…

My dad was a coal miner and when he used to catch me picking my nose he would say
"i'll swap you a black'un for a green 'un"
obviously due to his coal encrusted mucus

I used to believe…

My mom told me that if I picked my nose, my finger would stay there someday!!

I was told by a friend at school, and believed completely until I was almost an adult, that if your nail broke (or you bit it) down to the pink then it wouldn't grow back. This was because only the white bit grew, the pink was always the same size. It didn't stop me biting my nails but I did it VERY carefully!

I used to believe…

A friend of mine swears that he thought that the sign on cigarette machines reading "No sales to minors" was there because people who work in a mine weren't allowed to smoke, because all the gas down in the mines would blow up.

I used to believe…

When I was young, every time my mom caught me picking my nose she would threaten to send me off to live on a pig farm. One time, after wiping a booger on the couch, she picked up the phone and faked a phone call to Farmer Brown. I was mortified for the next hour, as I awaited Farmer Brown to come and take me away. Thank God he never showed up :-)

I used to believe…

My friend told me that if you sucked your thumb, your skin would get all mushy and your thumb would fall off.

I used to believe…

when i was very young i used to suck my thumb all the time. i was out with my mother at work when she noticed my thumb was a bit red and swollen from my constant sucking at it. She then told me if i continued to suck my thumb it would keep growing and growing until one day it would explode. i stopped sucking my thumb at that very moment.

I used to believe…

My dad told me, when I was about 3 or 4, that if I sucked my thumb, a garden gnome would come in the night and cut it off. I was terrified of garden gnomes, positive that they came alive after dark. needless to say, i stopped sucking my thumb!

I used to believe…

When i was about three, on the wall next to my bed, there was wall-paper with the faces of all kinds of boys and girls on it. I was facinated by this wall-paper and could look at it for hours. I had the strong believe, that if i could give them 'special' eyes, they could look at me too. So i gave them eyes made out of the material you get when you are picking your nose (i don't know the correct word!). It never worked because one day my mother did a spring-cleaning and she whiped all those tiny, dry (eye)balls off the wall. Great was my disappointment and i still hear the ticking sound of the balls on the floor!!

I used to believe…

My sister once told my child, who was picking their nose, that if they didn't stop it their eyeballs would fall out. It worked!
