When I was about 6 or 7, my dad owned a couple of beagles named Jack & Jill. One morning, much to our surprise, my sister & I found Jill in a dark corner of the barn with a litter of puppies! She had scratched a small hole in the cool dirt for her nest and was just crawling with teeny tiny beagle pups! My sister and I were so fascinated with the whole thing. We ran back to the house to announce our find and drag Dad back to the barn to see. Then, we asked the ultimate question - "Where did the puppies come from?" After much heeing and hawing, my dad finally came up with what he thought was a clever answer:
"See that hole she's in? She started digging and digging until she found them."
Needless to say, my sister & I were severely punished for the dozens of holes we dug around the barn that day in our determined attempt to find more puppies.
