A friend of mine only realized about a year ago (when she was 12) that a laptop computer was called that because it sits on your lap. And I didn't realize until 6th grade that the Beatles was spelled funny because it includes the word Beat...I just never thought about it...
A childhood belief about spelling

others believed things like this
- I thought that the song "Hands off she's mine" by The English Beat was actually saying "Anton, she's my aunt"— Nate
- I used to believe the word shoes was spelled shouse. It looked right to me... — Shouse
- I used to pronounce the word "Computer" as "Crocuta"
Anon - In first grade, I thought that if I've never heard of a word before, then it wasn't a word.— Destiny
- My friend's sister believed the lyrics to Gazza's "Fog on the Tyne" were "Fog on the dinasaurs mine all mine"— Suzanne
- I used to believe that the rapper Eminem's name was spelled M&M and anyone named Juan was spelled one.Anon
