Up until about 3 years ago i had always mistaken the expression: "Take it for granted" for "Take it for granite." As much as i tried to understand this, i could never comprehend why anyone would take anything for granite.
A childhood belief about speaking

others believed things like this
- I used to think that the expression "The former or the latter?" was actually "The farmer or the ladder?" — Fitzwilliam
- I forgot the expression "not cricket", so I said, "not tennis" instead.Anon
- My friend told me she had invented the expression 'Gordon Bennett' and I believed her!— SueE
- I thought the expression "so funny I forgot to laugh" was literal instead of sarcastic— Not so funny after all
- I use to believe that I could understand what my cat was thinking/saying. So I translated for about 2 years.— Cat Speaker
- For many years I didn't understand why everyone was talking about the 'youth in Asia' (euthanasia).Anon
