A childhood belief about cats and dogs

When I was about eight, my friends and I saw our neighbor's dog walking about while we walked home from school. We started calling to the dog when the owner told us not to touch it because the dog had rabies, and if it bit us, we'd have to get shots from a 3-foot-long needle in our stomachs. The dog was not ill, but I guess my neighbor just didn't want his dog getting swamped by a bunch of little kids. Nevertheless, I thought that if I touched a dog not on a leash, I would have to get a shot from a giant needle! I don't think I learned differently until I was about 12 or 13.
