A childhood belief about around the house

Sometimes I made my mom go ahead of me and turn on all the lights I'd need to get ready for bed. I was scared that in the dark lurked a scary person who would be frightened off if my mom turned on the lights. I was never scared of my brother's room, which I had to pass in order to go from the bathroom to my bedroom and which was dark, since I didn't go in there to get ready for bed. I was only scared of darkened rooms which I'd have a reason to go into.
