I thought the phrase "make ends meet" was "make ends meat." I thought it was some particular kind of meat or a dish made with this meat that people who were poor or having difficulties would prepare.
A childhood belief about speaking

others believed things like this
- When you are very poor you "can't make end's meat." End's meat is some sort of cheap very low quality meat.— Betty
- My mom was always talking about "making
ends meat" but I don't ever remember having it served at dinner!— John Stees - When I was six my sister told me Meat Pies were made from mashed up rats...to this day I can't eat a Meat Pie.— Jamie
- my brother used to believe that Ground Chuck meat was actually groundhog meat. Anon
- I used to believe that the meat dish 'tripe' was lion.— Kent
- I also thought that meat balls were made from testicals— Glenn
