A childhood belief about oral sex

When I was around 11, I stumbled upon an article explaining that "Most young people belive oral sex isn't actually sex." and that this was an incorrect belief. I had never heard of oral sex before and the only thing I could come up with was that oral sex meant making out. I also was shocked that older people like my mom thought that kissing a boy was just as bad as "doing it." That comparision seemed way too drastic to me. But still, I was afraid of my mom getting angry at me if I kissed a boy for a long time after that.
