I thought marshmallows were a "fruit" which they picked off from bushes, then bought at the store. I think this came from seeing cotton growing in the fields on a Georgia vacation when I was 3 or 4.
I explained this to my uncle (a farmer) when I was in kindergarten and he laughed so hard I thought he was going to have a coronary.
