I used to believe…

At the age of 8, I saw a TV show that talked about the link between those really big electricity pylons and cancer.
Every time we drove underneath them, I believed that holding my breath would prevent me 'catching' cancer.
In my mid-teens I realised I was still holding my breath everytime I went underneath them.

I used to think that if I rotated my body too many times in one direction it would get over-wound, kind of like a spring. So if my movements around the house had made me turn 360 degrees to the left, for example, I would then be forced to rotate 360 degrees to the right while standing on one spot.

I believed that all food you ate in your life stayed in your body, and if you ate too much too early in life, the food would no longer fit down your throat.

About the age of 4 I truly believed that my sleeping pattern controlled the sun. It would rise when I woke up and it would set when I went back to bed so, naturally, I controlled it. My whole world changed when one day I awoke around noon (must have had a late night with my older brother.) I started freaking out, telling everyone how sorry I was for not bringing the sun out. I guess my grandma didn't have the heart to tell me the truth, she just told me not to sleep in again because the world needs the sun.

When I was very young, I really believed that I could fly. I realise now this must have been dreams, because I often fly in my dreams...

I had a really scientific explanation for why poop was brown when I was little... First of all, people eat lots of food at picnics, and picnics only take place on sunny days, and the sun makes your skin brown, so the color of poop was caused by the food rolling down the inside of your skin picking up your sun tan.

When I was little, in order to get me and brother to go to bed early, my mother told me that every hour's sleep before midnight was worth two hours after midnight. Things got a bit confusing when, twenty five years later, I worked night shifts and slept from about 7am to 2pm. Is that before or after midnight???

I used to believe…

My twin sister and I often used to pretend we were asleep to either gain attention or get out of doing something. One particular day we lay down on the sitting room floor to pretend were were napping as my older brother and mum looked on. My brother piped up that we must be faking it as when people were really sleeping they would repeat the word "urglyburghly" over and over again... cue 4-year-old twins lying on carpet repeating the word "urglyburghly" as treacherous sibling and mother stood laughing.

I once saw my sisters drinking and wetting doll nude. It had a small hole in its right cheek to wet it self. So naturally I thought all women had a small hole in their right cheek for peeing.

I used to believe…

When I was little I thought certain people could 'hear' what I was thinking about. I got the idea from one of my teachers who just happened to have huge ears. Actually he was a very nice bloke but he just had really unfortunate ears. I think I was sitting in his class thinking to myself about how big his ears were… and then suddenly he turned and glared at me. (Probably because I was sitting looking dopey while I was supposed to be working.)
It seemed to me that the only logical conclusion was his colossal ears had allowed him to ‘hear’ what I was thinking about.
From there my belief expanded - I figured that in certain circumstances maybe anyone could 'hear' what I was thinking about - so whenever I mentally poured scorn upon anyone (unfortunately I was a very judgmental child) I would suddenly be struck with fear and dread in case the person had 'heard' what I'd been thinking.
After a while I began to suspect I was simply imaging things but this really just made things worse… for example... I'd see some guy on the street, and it might strike me that that person was abnormal in some way, so I'd think to myself - jeez how is it that individual come to be so fat, tall, skinny, ugly, stupid looking... whatever and then I'd suddenly think - Oh crap! I shouldn’t have thought that… he probably heard…. And then I'd think Nah don't be ridiculous people can't really hear your thoughts. But another part of my brain wouldn’t be convinced so easily. So I’d end up having this really stupid mental argument with myself about whether the guy would know what I was thinking or not – Finally I would have to tell myself to shut up in case the guy thought I was nuts arguing with myself.

When I was little, I used to take off all my clothes and threw them as far away from the toilet as I could before i pooed. For some reason I believed that if I left my clothes on while taking a dump, they would become contaminated and stinky. To this day I still don't know what gave me that idea!

When I was little my grandmother used to refer to taking a dump as 'the miseries'. I misheard this and for ages thought 'Miziwiz' was another name for poo.

When my sister and I were little, my Mum warned us we had to eat properly at the 5 course dinner we had every Christmas. She told us that if we would chew with our mouths open, or spit something out we didn't like, my uncle would throw up. Last year my uncle died. After the funeral my Mum, my sister and I were talking about our memories of him, and my sister and I said that he must always have had a weak stomach, because something small like people chewing with their mouths open would make him throw up. My Mum suddenly had to leave the room, and when we followed her to see if she was all right, we found out that she was laughing her head off. Somehow it had never occurred to my sister (31) and me (33) that my Mum just invented this throwing up story to make us behave ...

When I was little and I would not go to sleep, by daddy said the ginger haired Sam-Monkey, would get me, he lived in the garden shed. I never found out what it was but I always went to sleep.

Until I was about 9, I believed farts were actually bubbles...rather unpleasant brown bubbles, to be specific. Farts sounded different because some involved just a few big bubbles bursting loudly, while others were the result of a large number of small bubbles popping in rapid succession. These bubbles also explained why one's underwear sometimes ended up stained at the end of the day. All quite internally consistent, when you think about it.
