I used to believe…

When I was little, I believed that if I didn't go to the bathroom quick enough, I would actually explode.

My aunt Dorothy was a sweet lady. But one thing most everybody noted about her was that she was "obsessed with her bowel movements". Many times I remember hearing her tell how she went to the potty to try to poo, but "to no avail". That is my first memory of ever hearing the phrase "to no avail". So I got the idea that "avail" was a word for a turd or bowel movement. I began learning otherwise one day at school when I asked the teacher if I could be excused because I had to go and do an avail. Surely, I thought, that was a polite word, since my aunt Dorothy used it. The teacher asked what the heck I was talking about, and when she sorted it all out she actually made me stay after school for being so naughty as to use a word wrongly. That made me think that "avail" must be a "bad" word for a BM or turd. as surprising as it made it that my sweet aunt Dorothy would use such a word. In a later grade in school, I was to get a little ire from the teacher and ridicule from students because I burst out laughing when I first heard the phrase "to no avail" used in some other context unrelated to pooping. Fortunately, I avoided any actual punishment for that.

I used to believe that when I eat, the food actually falls down to the bottom of the stomach and piles up. I thought vomiting was caused when you ate too much and it reached the top. I thought poop came out when the food rots.

When I was young, I thought that if you get stung by a bee, you get the Chicken Pox. To this day, that thought pops into my head whenever I see bees. Lol! I have no idea where the idea came from, but I believed it :)

I used to believe…

When i was a little girl, my grandma told me that if you stretched after you ate, the food would come out of your ears. As i got older, I realized it was impossible. But still to this day, if i see someone stretching after a meal, i tell them, "stop, or the food's gonna come out your ears."

I always had to have the covers up over my legs before I could go to sleep. That way the monsters couldn't sneak up over the end of the bed and get me at night. As a matter of fact, at age 53, I still can't go to sleep if my feet, if not my legs, aren't entirely covered by a sheet at least.

When I was seven I asked my mom what was a migraine. She replied that it was "the mother of all headaches". So for several years after that, I thought a migraine was something you got when your mother had a headache.

I used to believe…

when i was young i thought it was illegal to sleep with my legs straight, and always had them curled up. one day at my babysitters, i was supposed to be napping but i couldn't sleep and slowly inch by inch stretched my legs out, terrified the whole time that my babysitter was going to come and get me in trouble. ....Nothing happened...I fell asleep.

I used to believe…

As a child I like to drink dill pickle juice. My mother not knowing if this was good for me told me that if I drank to much of it would turn my blood into water. I would drink some and then look at my veins. Seeing they were still blue and would say to myself, "OK I can still drink some more, so I did."
