The AID's panic was in full bloom when I was in 5th grade. The News was always announcing how many people were contracting AID's and dying.... at the same time my mama was pursuing the American Dream of being even slimmer and using a diet help called "Aids".
I began sneaking them out of her desk and flushing them down the toilet.. until it broke the toilet. She was yelling at me and asked what I thought I was doing... "I didn't want you to die of AIDS" lots of bawling...

When I was little, I didn't know that having butterflies in your stomach meant you were nervous. One morning I had a tummy ache, and told my mom I had butterflies in my stomach. My sister overheard, and thought I'd swallowed butterflies. My misunderstanding lasted until I was 8. My sister thought I was a butterfly murderer until she was 10.

I always heard that people went to the hospital when they were sick or hurt, so I believed that hospitals were only for people who had a disease called "sick or hurt."

I thought that poison looks like a green liquid like it does in cartoons. I wondered how you could poison someone's food without them knowing since wouldn't they see the green color?

When I was young I saw an anti drug commercial warning viewers about "sniffing". I thought this mean sniffing when you had a cold so I was always worried to "sniff" too much until I was about 15

When I had chicken pox my older brothers told me that I was getting them because of two guys inside me with hammers that were punching them out of my skin, and the only way to get rid of them was to let them punch me in the stomach...totally bought it.

I used to believe that taking medicine when you weren't sick would make you sick (cold medicine would give you a cold, headache medicine would give you a headache, etc.) I didn't even like to touch the bottles for fear of getting sick.

My mother sewed clothes for my sister, so when the adults talked about getting stitched-up at the hospital, I envisioned some sort of large machine that you would be run under to get sewn back together.
