I used to think that when you were sleeping you stoped breathing. Therefore when someone died they would soon wake up and live again.

I thought that if any part of my body was outside of the covers when I went to bed someone would come and chop it off. So, I would line the sides of the bed all the way down to the head with stuffed animals so I would be protected!

My parents had some carved wooden figures that my brother bought them in Korea - they were an old Korean man and woman, both with bizarrely carved faces and carrying big walking sticks. My sister convinced me that when I went to sleep at night, they came alive and beat me over the head with their little sticks.

When I was younger my brother told me that if you had one of those dreams where you were falling, and you hit the ground and died in your dream, you really died. I always shocked myself awake during those dreams, until one night I dreamed I hit the ground, and woke up just fine.

My auntie told me if I went to sleep with a smile on my face, God would love me more. I couldn't get to sleep most nights 'cos my facial muscles hurt so much from smiling!

I used to have trouble sleeping at night. My mother would try to talk me into falling asleep sometimes by saying, "You need your rest, we're getting up at the crack of dawn tomorrow!" What I heard was "We're getting up at the crackadon tomorrow," and I always thought she was talking about some dinosaur that was out roaming about very early in the morning.

I would have extremely vivid dreams as a child, and fully believed that when I fell asleep I would be transported to another world and live my life there. One night I had a bit of a nightmare (I was falling) and I woke up sort of bouncing in my bed. From that point onward I was convinced that there was an extremely strange little city living above the cealing of my bed...and when just before I woke up every morning I would fall down from it.

I learned the prayer "Now I lay me down to sleep..." to say at bed time, but the line "If I should die before I wake" disturbed me greatly and I was convinced I might die before I woke, so I started trying to sleep as stiff and strait with my arms at my side like the dead.

being born into a vietnamese family, we learned about lunar new years and how every year has a different animal. i always thought that when you slept at night, you would turn into that animal, and it scared the hell out of me to know that my mother was a snake.

When I got into bed at night and closed my eyes I used to think if I opened them more than three times I would have a nightmare.

I got very bored with squeezing my eyes shut everynight I just used to ignore it. It's perhaps why I have bad eyes now. :)

When I was little, my brother told me that if I slept with my legs curled up to keep warm, when I woke in the morning I'd be stuck like that for good; I assumed this was true, so every night I made myself straighten out my legs into the cold place at the bottom of the bed...
