I used to believe…

My niece walked into my father's "hunting room" with all the animal heads on the wall. She was so concerned as to what happened so we told her they all went to heaven. She responded with "just their butts?"

I used to believe that the dark spots on sidewalks were the remains of people who had been struck by lightning. I tried very hard to avoid stepping on those spots when walking down the street.

I grew up in the 60's and I truly believed that hiding under my school desk would stop the atomic bomb from hurting me. Wow what a kid will believe when taught by adults of whom they believed to know it all. The bomb never came however; I do not look for a desk anymore when I hear a bomb is possible...Who knows maybe that school desk could have saved me........:-)

I used to believe, when I was 7 or so, that actors who died in movies REALLY died. I was horrified.

I used to believe…

When I was about 4 or 5 in midwest USA, I understood life events to be something like

6 yo - get to go to school
10 yo - I made it to ten years old - no tornadoes killed me
13 yo - can have girlfriend and children if I want to
18 yo - get drafted and go to Vietnam
19-20 yo - die in Vietnam

That was pretty much the "life schedule" I thought I was required to work from. TV news at the time was certainly responsible for the last two steps - the news black-out we have today with Iraq in the US is not better though! I value my uneasiness with war.

I used to believe…

When I was little we took my dog, Toffy, to the SPCA, supposedly to be adopted. My parents told my brother and I that our dog had gone to a lovely family that lived on a farm that had lots of space for Toffy to run around on, and that she was very happy. It was only after watching a Friends episode, years later (I was in my late 20s) that I realised that Toffy had in fact been put down. I was shocked, believing all this time that she had been on a farm and enjoying every minute of it!

I used to believe…

When I was around 8 or 9, I used to believe that when people died in tv shows and movies via guns or jumping off a cliff, they really died. My explanation for this was that prisoners on death row volunteered for the job and were substituted in at the last second, since they were going to die anyway.
