My mom told me that bread crusts made my cheeks rosy so I should eat them. I was so worried that one sheek would be pinker than the other that I made sure that I chewed an equal amount of crust on each side of my mouth!

I was told when I was little that if you swallowed gum it would sit in your stomach for 7 years. I know a lot of other people have been told that too, but at the age of 23, I still believe it.

I used to think that coin-operated vending machines had the magical ability to turn my coin into candy. I'd hoped that one day I'd figure out the machine's secret and turn all of my saved money into candy.

When I was little, I started to question the tiny, bug-sized dough bubbles in the take-out pizza I ate (if you don't know what I'm talking about, it's the bumpy area under the sauce and cheese). That led me to believe that there were little creatures (bugs or something) baked into the dough. I didn't touch pizza for a while.

I though that skim milk was really 'skin' milk and I thought it was made from skin so I would never drink it. I beleived it until I could actually read the carton.

I used to believe…

For ages I believed that the yolk of an egg was the baby chicken that had died! I thought it was gross and it made me feel sick when I saw a runny yolk.

To make matters worse, my mum once made a hole in an egg with a pin and the air that was escaping made a chirping sound. You can guess what I thought it was - Yes - a chick that was still alive!

I used to believe…

A friend of mine brought her own lunch food to school. At the time, I ordered from the cafeteria and had heard all sorts of stories about bugs and maggots in food, so I usually tried to get my friend to share her food with me, to save me from having to eat aliens-disguised-as-chicken or what-not.

In reply, she told me that whatever fruits she had were 'from the tree of knowledge' and bad things would happen to those who ate them without permission. I had heard similar stories from my church-going relatives and believed her.

For quite awhile I wouldn't eat dried fruit, and I refused to believe that the real Biblical fruit was apples, which I loved at the time.

I also believed the bread in her sandwhiches was made with woodchips.

When I was a kid, one of my friends dropped some food, picked it up, dusted it off and said, "You have to eat your peck of dirt before you die." For yeaers after, I believed that there was some counter "up there" somewhere that tallied all of the dirt that you ate, so I became quite careful about any dirt on food.

I used to believe…

When I was small, I used to be convinced that if you swallowed the pips in apples, an apple tree would grow in your stomach, and eventually start to sprout out of your ears, nose and mouth, covered in juicy, red apples!

I used to believe…

Because it's awkward to do in public (yes, people can and do give you dirty looks for this), I prefer to swallow gum instead of spitting it in a trash can. This started at a young age.

My parents told me if I continued to swallow the gum, it would "gum up" my insides and my body would stop functioning properly.

...

For some reason, I didn't care enough about this to stop swallowing my gum.

I used to believe…

As a kid, I would watch old classic cartoons every day after I got home from school (quite old ones). I was a rather big fan of Popeye. I saw that by eating spinach, he got big and strong, and I (despite being a girl) wanted to be big and strong like Popeye too. So I asked my parents to buy and cook some spinach.

Not only did it taste bland, but I was quite annoyed when no matter how much I ate, I didn't grow huge muscles. But if at first you don't succeed... well, I ended up trying again a few more nights, and finally gave up after no results. Dammit.

When I was little, I asked my mom how ice cream was made. She told me that it was made by putting a cow in a big freezer. She also told me that chocolate milk came from brown cows, regular milk came from white cows, and strawberry milk came from pink cows.

I believed this until I was 12 years old, because people at school laughed at me when I told them how ice cream was made.

Until about five minutes ago, I did not know that pickles and gherkins were the same thing.
