When I was about 8 years old I developed a liking to lemons. As there was a big lemon tree in out front garden, I used to climb the tree, gather about 4-5 lemons and chow down on them sprinkled with salt.
My mom was irritated to see me eat so many lemons in one go (including the seeds) and she told me that if I don't stop eating them little lemon trees would grow in my tummy. It diddn't stop me eating lemons, but I did stop eating the seeds.
I believed her story right up until I was a teenager, when I accidentally swallowed a seed. I nervously waited for a tree to grow, and when none did I told my mom what an awful fibber she was!

Here I am laughing at what kids think. As a kid I've believed a couple of the things as well.

Until I get the to gum section. Imagine my shock to learn that gum does NOT stay in the stomach for several years like I've always believed. I had to Google it to prove myself wrong just now. I'm 34.

When me and my 2 brothers were young we were told that we couldn't drink 'Coca Cola' because it would make us really ill, we'd be sick and might die because we were allergic to it. One day round at my Aunties she was trying to get us to drink coke. We were convinced she was trying to kill us and we were all screaming and crying. It turned out the our mum wouldn't buy coke because it was the most expensive.

For as long as I can remember I have not liked onions. Since my daddy did he would always try to sneak them into my food. One day, I was about five, he made chicken and fried potatoes for me and mom. When I asked him if there were onions in it he looked me dead in the eye and said "eat 'em, they'll put hair on your butt". For the next few years of my life I checked my backside every night before bed just in case I accidentally ingested a piece of onion. To this day I wont even touch them. I am 23.

I was told that those little aniseed balls that are too hard to crunch, and you need to suck, made your teeth go black. the whole family was in on it, aunts, grandparents, parents. Even when I checked my teeth and they werent black, I was still told they were AND I BELIEVED IT!! And the only way to clean the black off your teeth was to eat a raw carrot!

I know this is common, but when I was about six i saw the commercial for gushers. I was scared to eat them after that, because I was afraid my head would turn into a fruit. My brother confirmed this and told me never to eat them. Later, I found out he just told me that so he could have all of the gushers.

my uncle used to think that "parmesan" cheese was called "Farmer John" cheese.... it took him YEARS to figure out the real word!
