I told my cousin who at the time was 6 that hot dogs were made out of wiener dogs (dachshunds). My Aunt told me a couple of years ago that my cousin wouldn’t eat hot dogs for the next three years. I was horrible. Sorry Cousin…forgive me?

A cousin of mine once told me that if I swallowed a watermelon seed, then I would have a whole watermelon grow in my tummy. Of course I believed her, since she was older than me, and from then on tried hard not to swallow any seeds. When I did, I was disappointed to not feel anything growing inside of me.

When I was little, my grandma got me to eat my vegetables by telling me that they were dinosaur food. Naturally, I proceeed to eat tiny broccoli trees, lettuce leaves, carrot logs, and celery branches. Unfortunaely, I did not know that "dinosaur food" only applied to what was on my plate. I later went out and sampled the leaves off the trees in my yard.

They tasted pretty gross, so I went back to only the food that was put on my plate.

I remember growing up and my dad eating a special cereal that we were allowed only to eat once in a while. Mom told us the name of the cereal was "Daddy Cereal" because it was only for him. When I got a job in high school, I asked my mom to tell me where to buy it (because I was making my own money). It was simple granola - to which I am pretty much addicted. And I still refer to it as "Daddy Cereal"

At my aunt's house, when I was little, I was always messing aroung- touching things, playing with things, even spilling things on the floor.

One day I was playing with neat-looking, push-button salt/pepper dispenser- pushing the black button and making pepper come out all over the floor.

My aunt saw me doing this, and told me to stop. She also said that this would, as she put it, 'make ants.'

By this, I thought that she meant that all the little granules of pepper that were coming out, were going to magically turn into ants if they got left there on the floor.

When I was 7 I believed that swallowed gum would stay in my stomach forever. I also believed that the fingernail bits I chewed off and swallowed stayed in my stomach forever. I sometimes lay in bed with a feeling of dread, imagining a huge, mutant ball of mingled gum and fingernails getting bigger and bigger until it would burst out of my stomach! (Good thing Alien was still decades in the future!)

I used to believe…

Since pistachios look vaguely like they could be shriveled up and discolored peanuts, I got the idea, from their name, as a child, that "achios" was another name for peanuts, and that pistachios were peanuts that had gotten shriveled and discolored from someone peeing on them! I wondered how anyone could possibly want to eat peanuts that had been peed on. Not surprisingly it was numerous years before I ever ventured to taste pistachios. When I did I found them to be in a category like anchovies, namely foods with a taste that one can be curiously drawn to even though one wouldn't exactly call it delicious. I'm sure that if I had dared taste them as a child, my thought that they were pissed-on peanuts would have seemed to be affirmed!
