I have always hated meatloaf..But my Dad found a way to convince me to eat it as a child. He told me that the little specks of Red were M&M's and that's all it took...I would eat it up.
Talk about gullible.

My Grandmama always told me that if I drank coffe it would rust my gizzard. I never drank coffee because of her telling me that, and today I still haven't drank any although I know that we don't have gizzards!

This isn't actually my belief, but my best friends, and I still tease him about it to this day. He said to me once, I really like bananas, but when you go to the store you have to buy so many, so I don't. It took me a minute to realize that he believed that you had to buy them in bunches like they sit on the shelves. He didn't realize that you can break off as many as you want and leave the rest. Men!

I don't like bread crust and didn't when I was little either. My dad always said that it would put hair on your chest as a joke and up until I was 8 I beleived it. Though, I still hate crusts.

My Dad told me that Chocolate Milk came from brown cows. I believed him. I didn't learn the truth until my hubby (#2) & I were travelling & came upon some brown cows & I told our daughter that was where chocolate milk came from!... The subject of where chocolate came from just had never come up all those years! Geeez!!!

My grandmother used to say "you have to eat a peck of dirt before you die", and not having any idea of the weight or measurement of a peck I believed that when you reached that limit of a "peck", you just automatically dropped down dead. It was my job to scrub the vegetables before cooking and you better believe I scrubbed the heck out of them.

my husband is still convinced that the cornflakes he ate one morning for his breakfast caused him to have to have his appendix out later that day. he shudders if he sees our son eating them.

When I was a kid I'd always hated Kool Whip, so it was no trick for a friend to convince me that Kool Whip was made from whipped beef fat. Imagine my embarassment when years later I was telling my in laws about why I wouldn't eat it and even went so far as to get a tub out of the fridge to read the ingredients, which of course included absolutely no beef fat.

As a boy, during school dinners, I really used to enjoy the turnip that was regularly served with our meals.
All the other kids hated the stuff, but I couldn't get enough of it, and regularly used to finish off their unwanted portions.
For some reason I ended up telling my mother about this, and - because she didn't like the thought of me eating off other kids' plates - she told me that turnip was well-known for stunting the growth, and that schools were encouraged to serve it by cunning parents, so that kids wouldn't outgrow their school uniforms too quickly.
This certainly put me off the vegetable very quickly, and for years afterwards I believed this to be gospel, and would casually inform other people about the dangers of this growth-stunting root vegetable.
It wasn't until I was about twenty - and my height had stayed stubbornly at five feet no inches - that I casually observed to my mother that perhaps I'd been warned too late about the turnip after all. It was then that she shamefully admitted her deceit, and I enjoyed my first serving of turnip in years!

'Girl Cheese Sandwich'. Sadly, it wasn't until I was 20 years old looking at a restaurant menu that I saw the printing 'Grilled Cheese Sandwich' and let out a big "Ohhhhhhhhhh".

When I was little my grandfather told me that if you swallowed a watermelon seed a baby would grow in your belly. Black seeds made black babies, and white seeds made white babies. When I went to my older & wiser 12 yr old aunt upset that I was going to have a baby after accidently swallowing a seed, she explained that you could only have a baby if a boy and girls pee-pees touched. For a long time after that I was scared to pee in a toilet without first flushing it, thinking there might be some boy pee in it and make a baby.

I was in a sandwich shop and heard someone order a BLT. I thought he'd ordered a DLT and that it was named after the DJ Dave Lee Travis.

I used to believe that, if you ate the core of an apple, the pips would sprout in your tummy and a tree would start growing and make you ill.

When I was little I used to believe if I ate enough chicken wings I'd be able to fly. I don't know where I got that idea but nobody in my family told me that.

I used to believe that the K.F.C. bucket on top of the pole had real chicken in it, only larger pieces and wondered where they got the large chicken.

My mom had me believing that if I ate chocolate I would break out in these horrible hives. She told everyone to make sure that I 'stay away from chocolate' because I was 'allergic.' When I finally had chocolate at someone's house, nothing happened. Now, as Mom is a huge chocoholic, I can only conclude that she didn't want competition for her stash...

I used to believe that glasses "sweated" like I did. When I sweated, the water inside of me came out. So when my glass of water sweated that was the water in my glass leaking. Then one day I realized that I was drinking coke and the sweat was clear! I was so embarassed.
