Until I was about 8 or 9, I believed that baled hay (like the big rolled bales) was Shredded Wheat. My parents told me that when it rained, they shrank down and the cereal people put them in the boxes.

I used to believe that Dad's (brand) Root Beer was ONLY for dads, not anyone else. One time when I was about six, I REALLY wanted a root beer, but ended up getting another kind of soda because I wasn't a dad, and I knew I'd get in trouble for drinking that root beer since I wasn't qualified.

there was once a commercial for diet pepsi with ray charles and and some back-up singers, they sang that "diet pepsi will take your breath away" and i thought it was literally going to take my breath away because i was too young to drink it
I love beef and broccoli and as a kid to get me to eat it all my mother told me that the white things in it were white carrot slices. In the first few months of dating my now wife I mentioned that there were not a lot of white carrots in a particular beef and broccoli dish, after much laughter she told me they were bamboo shoots not white carrots.
I used to believe that eating chicken skin will give me nightmares.

When my sister and I were very little, my mother wanted to emphasize to us that you do no chew and swallow hard candies because she didn't want us choking. So she called them "suck-ons". Unfortunately, she never bothered to tell us later in life that NO ONE ELSE calls them this. To this day (I'm 24) I have to still retrain my conditioned brain to remember that they are "hard candies" and not "suck-ons".
I was about 16 years old before I saw a real live tuna fish. Until then I believed they were about the size of bait fish, and that they were peeled with tweezers. Hence, the small can!!

One summer while on a long road trip (Minnesota to Florida) with my family, my Dad bought a bunch of beef jerky as snacks. I was really bored and 14 years old, and I convinced my 6 year old sister that jerky was tree bark. My then 13 year old brother continued the joke, and my little sister spent the better part of 2 weeks trying to rip bark off of trees in florida. She stopped eventually after we (my parents included) told her that it was only certain kinds of trees that had the right bark. It took another 2 or 3 years for her to figure out the truth.
I was asking my mom while helping her load the fireplace why she didn't just grind the wood blocks into sawdust so she didn't have to rearrange and reload the fireplace all the time, just fill it up. She explained that sawdust is combustible and could be dangerous just like how special precautions needed to be taken by people working with flour in plants (factories that manufacture flour). I listened to her whole explanation and responded with... "I never knew that flour grew in plants!" (picturing green house-type plants with cocoons hanging from the leaves filled with flour in large fields)
....So I briefly once believed that flour grew on plants. Sadly, this took place at the age of 21.
i used to believe that in the bottom of a can of dr. pepper was a teeny, tiny little doctor with a pepper shaker in his chest pocket of his doctor's coat. i'd always look for it after i drank a can, thinking i must've already swallowed it, when i couldn't see it in the bottom of the empty can.

i used to believe that toblerone was alcoholic. my mum told us that so she could have it all.
I used to believe that if people swallowed orange seeds, they would grow in their stomachs and very soon branches would come out of their ears. It happened that one day I accidently swallowed one. I remembered running to my Mom and asking her to take me to a doctor. At that time she told me that we should wait until the branches were visible and then she would hire a gardener to tend me! So I waited patiently for weeks. After some time,I decided that the orange seed I accidently swallowed was a bad seed.
I used to believe that my mother wouldn't notice when I opened a new pack of cookies, eat some of them, then rearrange the ones left in the package, and seal the package with some sellotape. Being a mom myself now, I know that it is impossible not to notice....
