When I was little, my sister used to tell me not to swallow my gum because it would make my guts stick together.
I was two when my parents got married, and my mother had always been a horrible cook. One day my new dad presented me with a plate of golden brown, fluffy pancakes and I absolutely refused to eat them. When he asked why I wouldn't even touch them, I said there must be something wrong with them because they weren't black like my mother's.

My boyfriend's 8 year old nephew refused to eat monkey bread, because he "would never eat anything that had monkey's in it!"

My mother used to tell me not to chew on cough drops (probably to keep me from eating them like candy). Because of this, I came to the conclusion that they were poisonous, and biting or otherwise breaking them would release the poison. They were safe as long as they were sucked on until they either became so small as to be swallowed, or completely dissolved. I believed this until I was probably in my teens, when I accidentally bit into one and didn't die.

when i was little i was told about milk making your bones grow, so i drank and drank and drank, and for the longest time couldn't figure out why i had stopped growing and wasn't getting any taller. i have now come to terms with my height and have never broken a bone. so i guess the milk worked at least one way. *grin*

My father used to tell me that squashes are eggs of crocodiles. This really encouraged me to eat a lot of it thinking that it can really make me as strong as a crocodile. I can't remember how I come to realize this wasn't so.

I used to think that if you actually ate the seeds from an apple or orange, then a small tree would grow inside your belly.
getting bigger and bigger each day and finally you'd start to see the branches growing out of your mouth and there was no way to stop it.
you'd just eventually suffocate and die!
that's why to this day
-even though i know it's not true -

I used to believe that broccoli was little trees that were shrunken so you could eat them, and that if you planted them they would grow back to their normal size

when I was in preschool our class had a st patricks day party and all the food was dyed green. someone told me that if I drank the green milk I'd turn into a leprechaun. Being the feisty lil rebel I was, I drank it anyways. A while later I started to think about the leprechaun thing and looked in the mirror. I noticed my ears were unusually pointy and became convinced they were right: I was a leprechaun!!!! It took me years to realize that my ears had been pointed forever, and it wasn't the symptoms of my descent into leprechaun-ness.

I was convinced as a child that the Navel station was where you got your belly button checked. (not sure what for). When my parents said that was not what happened there; my sister and I assumed it then must have something to do with oranges.

When I was little, I heard my mother talking to my grandmother about recipes. My grandmother gave my mother a recipe for Shepherd's Pie, one that she got from her mother, my great grandmother.
Now, my great grandmother's last name was Shephard, so for years I thought that her family invented it! That was, after all, why it was named "Shephard's Pie."
Of course, when I found out other families had it too, I was a bit confused. How could they have our family recipe? All sorts of stories went through my head. My mind eventually settled on that my great grandmother had sold the recipe a long time ago, not realizing how popular it would be, and it became really famous. It wasn't spoken of in my family because they were probably bitter they could have become rich off it.
It wasn't until years later that I found out the truth of it being an old English dish, and most likely had nothing to do with my family.

When I was little I had a love of playing with Play-Doh. I learned to read when I was two, so I always knew that it said "Non-Toxic" on the can. I was told by someone, my mom probably, that it meant that if you ate it it wasn't poisonous. I took that to mean that I could eat all I wanted.
