I used to believe…

When I was in Kindergarten the kids used to say that if you drank chocolate milk you would turn darker, and that if you drank regular milk you would turn whiter;and I used to believe them. It's funny becuase I'm Mexican so I'm on the dark side and since I lived in a hot place I got darker so of course I thought it was becuase I drank chocolate milk.So from Kindergarten to like 5th grade I drank nothing but white milk becuase I wanted to stop getting dark.(Or something...I don't even remember why).Ha ha.Now I drink as much chocolate milk as possible.Ha ha.

For a very long time my mom had my brother and me convinced that if we ate the seeds in grapes, they would germinate in our stomachs and a tree would grow out of our mouth with branches and leaves out of our ears.

I used to believe that tripe was a kind of fish. Growing up in New England my mother prepared pickled tripe regularly. One day in a restaurant with my parents and a young friend I ordered pickled tripe. My buddy asked what it was and I explained that it was like a trout and that the swam upstream to spawn.

When I was young and visited my grandparents, I would use my grandpa's cocktail cherries on my ice cream sundaes. In order to keep me from eating them all, and leaving him cherryless with his evening cocktail, my grandfather told me that the human body couldn't digest maraschino cherries, and if I ate too many my tummy would get full and I would die. When that didn't work, he told me the red dye was poisonous and if I ate more than one per day it would kill me.

I used to believe…

When I was a kid one of my friends moms told us kids that you could die if you ate too many Nanaimo bars (coconut/chocolate/crumb base with custard creme middle and hard chocolate top layer), while we were all oogling a plate of them. Obviously, she told us this because then we wouldn't eat them all, but it stayed in the back of my head for years and years afterwards.

I believed chewing gum was made out of the eyes of deer.

I used to believe…

Worms and Uncooked pastry.

My Grandmother told me that if I ate uncooked pastry it would give me worms. All she had to say was "Don't eat the dough." When I was 7 or 8; during a class cooking day at school, I touted my belief to a number of my peers (about 7 or 8 years old). The teacher overheard and dismissed my belief. I felt really silly and embarrassed.

Kids are programmed to believe the things adults say.

I used to believe…

When I was a kid my grandmother went to hospital to have a hysterectomy. Being a child I was protected from an explanation which I would have been unable to comprehend. However I did get an answer when I asked my grandmother why she had to go for an operation. She told me that she'd eaten a tin of cold baked beans. I was six and after that explanation I never EVER entertained the idea of eating tinned beans until I saw steam coming off them. My first mouthfull of cold beans was in my teens.

I used to believe…

My dad told me that rice was dried maggots, and would become alive in my stomach... I wouldn't eat it ever... the first time I tried it I was 23 and I still had to drink a lot before I was talked into it..

I used to believe…

After getting over the belief that swallowing seeds would cause trees (or plants) to grow in my tummy, I latched onto the belief that it was impossible to grow anything in your body..... until I met Steph. When she was a toddler, she stuffed a bean up her nose. It wasn't too unpleasant at first, so no one noticed. After a couple of days, it began to stink and to affect her breathing. When it was removed at the hospital, the bean had actually begun to germinate.... so I was wrong again!

I used to think that all sodas/pop, had caffeine.

When my dad was little he used to think vanilla was actually plain. Chocolate, strawberry, butterscotch, banana, etc. were all flavors.

I used to believe that tapioca pudding was made of a whole bunch of tiny worms. I'm convinced that my mom told me that, but she still denies it. I still stay away from that worm-filled pudding.

I used to believe…

If you ate green M&Ms it would make you horny.

I used to have nightmares that if you put spicy foods on people's eyes it would burn them out. My spicy foods of choice were either pepperoni slices or italian hot peppers.

When I was younger, I was learning about farm animals and I asked my mom where hamburgers came from. She explained that hamburger meat came from cows. For some reason I derived that if ground beef came from cows, then a solid steak came from horses. Why else would there be horses on a farm??

When I was younger, I thought the dead flies on our windowsill were raisins and ate them.
