Until very recently, I believed that pickles were cucumbers that had gone bad. I'm 22. A few years before that, I thought they were a separate veggie that grew on their own, until a family member corrected me otherwise. My friends and fiance has not let me live it down since!

I used to believe (until I was 14, actually) that a gherkin was a type of shaggy goat.

Up untill about a year ago I thought that pickles grew on a pickle tree or something!! I had no idea they were actually cucumbers, untill my mother told me.

One day as a child, my mother and I were sitting down to eat in a small diner. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich which came with a pickle. I picked up the pickle and asked my mother, "Mommy, what animal do pickles come from?"

I was in the car reading a book out loud and one of the words in it was gherkin. I pronounced it "jerkin".

Further to Debbie's misbelief about wally (gherkin) I can confirm that she was right. In certain parts of the country a gherkin is indeed a "wally",as the article below mentions briefly.

And also here

Hope that helps.

A wally really is a name for a pickled gherkin! That girl wasn't lying and is indeed wiser than you!!
