When I was younger, I used to beleive that you have to be older than the girl to get married. I was mad because I liked this girl (I was in kindergarten I think) and I said I wanted to marry her and I couldn't becuase I was younger than her.

I used to think that the word mailman came from the fact that the mailman was a male. I don't really know why.

I live in a town next to a large ICI chemical plant where my grandad worked. There was often a stink floating in the air and grandad told me that the smell was coming from a furnace in which all the worker's sweaty socks were burned every day so they didn't have to wash them. I was 27 before I thought 'hang on a minute....'

When I was about 4 years old, my older cousin who was a boy, told me that boys were always older than girls, and I believed him until I was about seven years old.

Up until I was about 5 or 6 years old, I thought that my great-grandmother was actually my "grape" grandmother because she always wore this blouse that had grapes all over it.

When I was about ten, I read the word "prostitute" somewhere. I thought a prostitute was a member of a religious order, something like a nun. I pictured groups of prostitutes walking around in habits and doing things for charity... in retrospect, I think I had them mixed up with Protestants... though I don't know where the nun bit came from...

My mom was my Girl Scout troop leader growing up. At our first meeting (way back in Brownies, when I was 6), she told us that in our Brownie troop we would get sisters. What she meant was that all the members of the troop were like sisters, but I took her literally and thought that the other members of the troop would become my blood relatives somehow. Since I was an only child and I wanted a sister at the time, I was very excited, and I kept waiting for us to magically become "sisters." It took a year and a half for me to realize that this wasn't going to happen.

I used to think that a bridal shower involved pouring water on the bride, or sticking her in the shower and turning on the water. I could never figure out why anyone would want to have one.

My older sister, whom I love dearly, once told me that I wasn't my parents' child. She said that they had found me under a rock in a back alley.

A year later, when I found out that my mother had to have me cecerian, she told me that my mom secretly referred to me as the "stupid baby". I believed her for years. When I finally told my mom about it a few moths ago, she called my sister and yelled at her. :)

My father, the loving man he is, told me that when i turned twelve, I would turn into a boy. But my sister (who was thirteen at the time) was a girl. I pointed this out to him, and told me that Heather had been a boy untill she turned twelve. From then on I had my mom buy me boys clothes so that I would be prepared. I was pissed off when I turned twelve and was still a girl.

I used to think that when a couple went on a honeymoon, it was always to a quaint inn or cabin in the mountains. I'm not sure where I got this belief, since my parents went to Toronto on their honeymoon. I also thought that the couple stayed dressed up (i.e. the bride always wore the dress, and the groom always wore the tux) for the entire honeymoon.

I used to think that my great-grandmother was this lady that worked at a store that I once met when I was 4 and she was showing us her glass pieces (she was trying to sell them to us!)

I used to think that the place my Dad went every day was actually called "Work". I also thought that the Government would print money which was then delivered to work in big trucks and they kept it in a room at the back somewhere, and at the end of every week the boss (who was a fat bald man in a suit) would call my dad into his office and hand him some of the money.
