I used to believe…

My mum and dad split up when I was four. Later I thought this was because they wanted to give me and my brother two Christmases and two birthdays every year because we lived with our mum and our dad came to see us on another day every week. It made me love them both even more! It was quite disappointing when my mum told me that it was 'just one of those things', but it was still great having two birthdays and two Christmases.

From ages approximately ages 10 to 14, I had HUGE growth spurts (at one point, growing 6 inches in 3 months). The "growing pains" in my arms and legs were sometimes extremely painful. I was convinced that the pain was because I was dying from some horrible disease. I never told my mom about them because I knew how upset she would be at her youngest child dying, or at very least, it would bankrupt her from the medical expenses. There was nothing ever wrong with me. :)

I thought that when I grew up I would have really curly hair for some reason (it's as straight now as it was then). I would also have an oak-panelled study and I'd sit and write in it and be stressed out. I'd have a nervous maid who'd bring me coffee on a tray. She looked kind of like the maid on the Cluedo box. None of this looks set to come true.

I later thought that when I turned 16 I'd be beautiful, have a boyfriend, and never say the wrong thing. Sad really

My mom told me when I was like seven that I was adopted, I cried and cried, and I believed her, then a few years later, i said,"how can I be adopted if i look just like you!" To this day they make fun of me.

I used to believe…

It was rather cruel of my mother to lead me to believe that stepping on/in someone else's shadow would cause that person pain. Even today, I avoid doing this.

i used to believe that when a couple got married they had sex as they were standing there saying thier vows oops

I used to believe…

My ex-girlfiend's daughter was about 3 or 4 years old and her mother also had a 8 month-old baby boy at the time.

In conversation, I referred to the baby as a boy. The daughter corrected me and said "That's not a boy, that's a baby!"

She wouldn't believe me when I tried to explain that he was a baby boy. In her mind, it was either a boy or a baby, it couldn't be both, and clearly it was a baby.

I used to believe…

Once my mom told me I was born black and turned white at 3

I believed her and took great offense to any racial slur

I read a book once, as a kid, in which someone who was marrying someone else said "he's dark-haired and I'm blonde. Admirable". As a result, I thought that this was the best possible arrangement, while marriages in which both parties were blonde or brunette were somehow inferior, and marriages between blonde men and brunette women were perfectly impossible.

I used to believe…

While groing up, my dad told me I had previously been a dog. He took me to the doctor, he ave me a shot and I became a little boy. The messed up thing about it was, I am adopted. So when he told this story to a 5 year old, I really believed it! I think I was around 8 when I learned the truth. I still want to smack my dad in the back of the head to this day...

I used to believe that clothing would grow at the same rate as people. If you bought something that fit when you were 5, it would still fit when you were 30. In stores I would often stand looking at the tag of a shirt waiting for it to change from a 'Small' to a 'Medium'.

I used to believe…

My cousin's brothers and sisters all told him that he had been found in a wheelie bin so my Aunt and Uncle had taken him home. He believed this until he was 7

I used to believe…

My uncle was born on the same day as me (Feb 28) but is about 30 years older. When my mother told me about this, I imagined how much more food he had been eating to be twice as big as me but be born on the same day...

I used to think that everyone lived to 100 and then automatically died. Because 100 is really old and nobody could ever lived past that.

I used to believe…

My mom played a joke on me when I was young. She had picked up a new picture frame from the store. And as you know, new frames come with that fake picture in it, so you can see what a photo would look in it. Well I saw this and asked who the three little kids were in it. She said that they were my brothers and sisters that I had never met. I got all confused and excited that I now had a sister to play with. But then she said she was just joking...sigh...I never got that sister to play with.

I thought that when I grew up I HAD to start wearing polyester like my mom.

I used to believe…

My mother called my father Bill and he called her Phyll, and I thought they were calling each other the same thing.

I used to believe that everyone involved in a marriage was "the bride", and that as long as you were present, you could be called "the bride". Eventually I understood that men were called something else, and they were called "Brooms". I was dumb.

I used to believe…

when i found out "The Truth" about the easter bunny, tooth fairy etc. I lost all faith in my parents and thought my mom was probably a cat burglar by trade and everything i knew was wrong, the moon landing was a hoax, etc.

I used to believe that women had babies by virtue of being married and in love. Men and women got married because they loved eachother, therefore being in love produced babies. I was totally disgusted when I found out the truth (via reading Womans Own, when about age 9)
