I used to believe…

When I was about 8 or so, I remember my dad watching those court shows with real cases. I came to the conclusion that ALL parents had to pay child support. So one day, my dad was saying out loud some of the bills he had to pay. I then asked "What about child support?" He looked at me confused, and said "What?" I was too embarrassed to say it again, so I just walked away.

i used to think that the paparazzi were a group of Italian criminals or spies. i have no idea why??

I used to believe that when my parents and I were touching, they could hear my thoughts. I thought that all parents could read their kid's thoughts when they were touching and they all conspired together and decided not to tell their children so that they could hear their thoughts and hear the bad things they didn't want to tell their kids.

I really didn't like touching my parents for long periods of time then!

I used to believe…

When I was very little, probably about 2 or 3 years old, I was sitting in my car seat fastening my seatbelt. I was proud that I was getting good at doing that. I thought to myself that once I'd mastered seatbelt-fastening, I just had to learn how to knit and how to do up buttons, and I'd know everything I needed to know in life!

When I was little I was a flowergirl for my uncle's wedding. They were getting married outside and it was just a little windy so the first flower petal I threw down landed right in the bushes. I spent a panicy minute trying to get it out quickly thinking that the bride had to step dirrectly on every flower because she didn't know where she was going.

I grew up in Reno where there were always signs posted by the slot machines that said "No Minors". I thought that they didn't want miners to play the slot machines because they were already rich enough from mining all the gold.

When my little brother was about three years old, I asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. He replied, "a California dancing raisin!" Boy, did I ever have a hard time explaining to him that he couldn't be a raisin when he grew up.

I used to believe that my father stopped reading me stories because he grew too tall to fit in my room anymore.

i used to believe that my brother and I were going to switch places with my parents - that as we got bigger, they would get smaller. I was under 5, because my other brother had not been born yet - and it seemed to make sense. But I distinctly remember this belief - as it seems profound to me now - knowing that we do in a sense take care of our parents as they grow old...

I used to believe…

When I was young I used to think that a urologist was "your ologist". This created conversations such as "He's a urologist" "My ologist?" "No, a urologist" "I know, my ologist". This would go on for at least five minutes.

I used to believe…

When I was little and grown-ups asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I would always reply "I want to work in a toll booth." Probably because of the slight embarrassment, my parents finally asked me why I wanted to work in a toll booth. "Because they're rich!" I replied. I thought they kept all the toll money.

I used to think that it was against the law to marry anyone who didn't look like you. I think I thought that because the kids always looked like the parents and no-one would know who you were if your parents didn't look alike. Thank God it's not like that!

I used to believe…

When I was about three or four I thought my parents had a fun party every night after I was asleep (they didn't). At night after they thought I was in bed I would sneak onto the stairway (my bedroom was on the second floor) and sit quietly, listening hard to hear if the party had started yet. But I always fell asleep before it did!

I belived that when someone wanted a divorce, they would dress up in black clothing and walk down the aisle again. Like, an opposite wedding. I made my barbies do it before i would remarry them to someone else.
