I used to believe that if you wanted children of your own, you'd automatically get one. =]

As my parents had given me a name, I thought that it was up to me to give them names too

I used to believe the guards at Buckingham Palace were actually robots, which explained why they had (seemingly) giant heads, showed no emotions and marched around in groups when they weren't just standing still.

This girl in my 2nd grade class told me that when her mother was going to become a teacher, they put a tube down her nose in order to check her knee. I believed it until 8th grade, when I confronted her about it and she told me it was not true.

Glad it was not, since eventually I would teach for a couple years as well.

When I was little, I asked my mother how people found their spouses, and she told me that, when women wanted to get married, they went out and looked for a husband. (This is how I remember her explanation, at any rate. In reality, it was probably not this simplistic.) Anyway, for several years, the image in my mind of what it looked like when people decided to get married was a woman walking down the street calling, "Who wants to marry me?" It was always the same street, too--this place by the train station where we used to pick my dad up from work.

When I was 3 or 4, I thought the man on the box of Quaker Oats products was my grandma. For some reason I can't entirely comprehend, they looked alike to me back then.

My parents had their house built when they got together. Based on this, I thought that everyone's parents had built the house they lived in when they got married. I thought that when people died, their house was torn down so that a married couple could build their own house there.

My brother is my half-brother from my mom and my sister is my half-sister from my dad. When I was young my brother told me he was more my sibling than my sister because we had the same mom. I believed him for the longest time!

I must have been around 7 or 8 years old when my mom informed me that she had "jewelry duty" the next day. I thought it kind of weird that she had to leave the house and go make jewelry, but hey, what the heck. When she came home the next day, I asked her to show me what she had made. She had a confused look on her face until I explained that I wanted to see what she made at "jewelry duty". She stifled a laugh and in her sweet southern accent told me that she had been called for J-U-R-Y duty, where she then explained about how people participate in the court system. Did I feel stupid? Absolutely not! I was just bummed that I didn't get any pretty jewelry from my mom! LOL!!

When I was a very little kid I'd ask Mom where Dad went in the morning. She said he went "to work". When I asked why, she thought that explaining what a lawyer was to a 4 year old might be a bit complicated so she just told me that he went to work to "make money" For a long time I thought my Dad went to a workshop and literally manufactured money.

As a child, I thought mannequins in department stores were actual people. I asked my mother if she'd go shopping for a husband with me when I was older, so I could pick one out. She declined, and ultimately did not meet my husband in a department store.

I used to believe that a divorce was a ceremony, like the opposite of a wedding. Your family and friends would attend, wearing black. The bride and groom would walk down the aisle together at the beginning of the ceremony, an officiant would declare them divorced, and they would leave separately.

When I was little, my older sister told me there was this "Brother & Sister Trading Center" where she would trade me in if I behaved badly.

When i was in about 2nd or third grade, my Mom would always tell me that when you turned 7, every parent cooks their child and eats them (wierd, i know)... so i remember sitting on the play ground at school, and looking at all the older kids (older than seven) and assuming they all ran away from home since their parents never cooked them... i started making my own escape plan, and really freaking out for when my birthday would come. then i turned seven, didnt get cooked, and im TOTALLY going to say that to my kids when im older.

In kindergarten, I had 2 friends who were sisters. One of them was about a year older than the other. They looked a lot like each other and always were the same clothes, so I assumed they were twins :D Later on, my own sister told me what twins really were.

you know how there is MD after the name of a doctor?? well i thought that it meant that all doctors where from the state of Maryland...i didn't realize it was an abbreviation for medical doctor.
