When I was little and my mum and dad went out they would always say they were going to see a man about a dog - I upset every time because we never ever got a dog and I wanted one so badly.

When my daughter was young, she thought that she would need to look in the phone book to find a husband to be sure that they both had the same last name.

On one of my earliest birthdays, my grandmother (who was at the time receiving therapy for dementia) presented me with a beautiful doll. A little confused, she said "I think you should call your dolly 'Therapy'." I agreed, and carried the doll everywhere for years. It wasn't until I was in my late teens that I realised 'Therapy' wasn't actually a girls name...

When I was a little girl my grandad used to say 'I was a little girl when I was your age.' I believed him for years and was quite disappointed when my Mum told me it was not true. I wanted to grow a beard!

One childhood friend of mine was really rich and they had a maid. One day she told me that her mom had fired the maid. In my mind I imagined the mom firing a gun at the maid and killing her. I was horrified and reported it to my mom, but she just laughed at me.

I used to believe that grown-ups were born "grown up" and that I would stay a little kid forever.

I thought that when you grew up you changed your name. Carl sounded like a kid's name, so when I was older I thought you chose a more grown-up name like Frank, or Bob or something.

When I was about 5 my mother had an evening job packing biscuits at Peek Freans factory in South London. She told me one day that the supervisor used to come round regularly to tell the workers to whistle to make sure they weren't eating any of this biscuits. I believed her and told people the story for the next 20 years or so. Then she told me she'd been joking.

when my brother was about 4 or 5, we convinced him that we had found him in the trash can behind the circle k. we gave him full details of the day we found him but told him we loved him anyway. after about a year, he just "accepted the facts" and started telling people about the day we found him behind cirkle k, but that it was okay with him because we loved him anyway.

When I was really little my parents went on holiday and my nan came to look after me. I'd never been around her without my parents around, and was worried because I thought she'd turn into some kind of wicked witch grandma, obviously some kind of amalgam from different fairy tales. The week leading up to it was torture. I'm glad to report we had a great time, although maybe it just seemed that way because I was so relieved not to have ended up in her cooking pot...

I was probably about 6 when i was first told about blow jobs, but i thought it was a real job. Like a profession, and i just imagined a massive warehouse type factory thing where people got oral sex.

When I was about 4, I thought everyone got pocket money (sorry if that's just a British term - it means 'allowance') from their parents all their lives. My teacher asked the class what we wanted to be when we grew up, and I said "The queen, because she gets a lot of pocket money".
