as a child I believed that trash collectors worked only on Friday, since that was the day our trash was collected. I never understood why when Friday was a holiday they took the day off, since they had to come on Saturday anyway. If you have to work only one day per week, who cares if it's Friday or Saturday?!

I think I am a relatively normal adult, but when I was five I used to believe that the goal of parents was to kill their kids. I remember once that I interrupted my father and he put his hand around my neck to quiet me down. I remember thinking, "okay this is it." Eventually, he let go and I thought to myself, "well, he won't do it now, there would be too many witnesses."

Our neighbourhood was across the street from a large university. The buildings that faced our neighbourhood contained the medical school and the teacher's college. (There were lots of other buildings, but I never saw them) Therefore, I thought that I had to be a doctor or a teacher when I grew up, because those were the only things you could learn how to be in that city. I never questioned how my father had managed to go to that same university and become a programmer...

I used to believe…

When I was very young, I overheard my father quietly telling my mother that he was afraid he might be fired. I decided that that meant his employers would take him out the back door and shoot him dead. This really scared me for a short time until I figured out what it meant. I never did ask anyone or tell them about my fears.

I used to believe…

When I heard an adult talk of someone getting fired from his job, I thought that he was actually thrown into a furnace and for a long time I worried that my father might get fired.

I used to believe…

When I was five or six, I recall asking my mother about the rings she was wearing. She explained that the rings in question were her wedding rings and that when people are married they wear special rings. Several months later at our cottage I happened upon the rings on the bathroom counter and promtly started to cry - in my mind I somehow figured if you took off those rings you were no longer married.
