I was 14 until I realised that pipe-cleaners were for cleaning pipes. I had never seen them used for anything other than arts and crafts.
It wasn't until I saw them for sale in a tabaconist that I broke the word down and realised it was a "pipe" - "cleaner".

Within a week of starting primary school aged 5 I made an astonishing discovery. When I got home I said
'Dad I'm not Alice in Wonderland you know',
Aren't you? he said.
'No' I said, 'I'm Alice Cahill'
'Oh how do you feel about that, he asked
'It's OK'
Dad had no idea that I had maintained this belief - one he instilled in me from as far back as I could remember.
Looking back on it I felt very special 'knowing' there was this famous story about me and it gave me a lot of confidence.
When I was about 8, and my brother about 5, he got a new go-bot named, "Psycho." When he asked me to read this name, I told him confidently that his killer robot was named, "Pistachio." I can only imagine that this raised a few eyebrows on the playground later.
Dad had us all convinced that if we left Silly Putty out of it's egg, after playing, it would crawl away on it's own. I grew up thinking it was actualy just part of the monster from the Blob!!
I used to believe, like others here, that I was the only real person in the world and everything within a certain radius had to be constructed by hidden skeletons as I came near them, once I had passed through an area the Skeletons then quickly took everything apart again as they had a finite resource from which to create the world with.
I thought the faster I travel or move from place to place the harder the Skeletons had to work in order to build the world for me. I tested out this theory by diving in and out of rooms quickly or if I was in a plane look out of the window as fast as I could.
I had this strange belief that I was the only real person in the world and everybody else were actors, it was kinda like some sicko real version of the Truman show
As A Child: I used to believe dolls and stuffed animals would GET YOU if you did not say goodnight to them every night and promise to save them if a fire should break out in the night
I used to take my toy cars to bed with me and would wake up in the morning only to find that they were gone. I used to believe that they drove down to the bottom of my bed and disappeared. It was a few years before I found out that my mother kept finding them when making the bed and would put them back in my toy cupboard.
My sister used to believe that she was born as a monkey and then shaved. This was because I showed her a photo from an encyclopedia with a human and a chimp baby and said it was the two of us.

I used to believe that I could control the weather... I had limited success

I used to believe that when I grew up I could invent a new color and it would be number 65 in the crayola box!Because I saw colors other people could not see.
I used to believe that I had to say Good Night to every individual toy and doll I had, and I had alot of toys and dolls, or else the slighted one would get me in the night. So I started to group them together by saying Good Night to all the toys on the cupboard and all the dolls in the closet and all the toysand dolls on the davenport....and just to make sure I alway said Good Night to all the toys or dolls I might have forgotten or missed or had been left in the livingroom--that pretty much covered them all.
But of course the scary creatures who lived in my dollhouse at night(that my mother had placed strategically in front of my nightlight so I could see their shadows walking around in the rooms at night...)would get me anyway. Sometimes my mother would change the bulb in my nightlight to a colored one, I don't know why--she must have thought it was cool...but nothing is more terrifying than seeing your toys and dolls staring at you in a red light...like some kind of horrible thermal night vision infra-red scope. The green bulb was scary too.
I used to think that the human body was so amazing and complicated that there was no way more than one could be created and therefore I was the only ''human'' in the world. Everyone else was, of course, robots. Much easier to create realistic robots than human beings...

I used to believe that the electronic "talking" toys had a little guy living inside who's only job was to sit there and supply the voice for the toy.
I used to belive that only me and the people around me were the only people in the world doing something!!
I used to believe that I'd be one day taken off earth and taken to heaven, when i finished my training on earth (which consisted of learning pain, happiness and being teased all the time. I thought that I was supposed to go through selfishness, depression etc, and then I'd finally complete my training, and everyone else knew this, and each had a special job to do (ie. be nice, tease, be bitchy and stuff)
I use to get scared when the iaghts went out because I thought allmy toys would come to life.
I used to believe I was the only "real" person on the earth, and everyone else was a robot put here to interact with me.
until i was about 12, i used to believe that the Earth moved when I walked instead of me moving when I walked. Kind of like a treadmill. Im now 16 and I still dont know why I thought that. Oh well!
