When I was about 7 or 8, one of my friend's older sisters had a doll whose hair would change colors based on the temperature of the water inside the doll's hairbrush. She told me that this also worked on humans - hot water would yield blonde hair, cold water would make you a brunette, and lukewarm water would change you to a redhead. Since I was a "Little Mermaid" fanatic, I longed to have red hair. I brooded over this for months until I finally asked her if I could borrow the hairbrush to use on myself. She then confessed that she had been lying.

My favourite stuffed animal was called Goat. He was about a foot high and two feet long and black...
I loved goat and as a young child couldn’t get to sleep without him.
It wasn’t till I was 14 that my mum told me it was a Yorkshire terrier with the whiskers cut off...
Oh the shame
After seeing an afterschool show, I believed my mind, if I believed, could make ANYTHING happen. So I tested this theory by sitting outside the house and staring at the wall. I believed I could create a door in the wall. When nothing appeared after an hour, I lamented that I must not have had enough belief.
I used to believe that someone had made a mistake in making me a girl, since being a girl didn't suit me, and that it would just be a matter of time till the error was fixed and I magically became a boy. In the meanwhile, I thought I should continue acting like a boy and not make a big deal out of it, so no one would notice the difference when the actual change came. Now I'm a lesbian, and I don't want to be a boy anymore.

I used to believe my barbies came alive at night, so I would always try to catch them in the act.
i used to imagine that the entire earth was just a puppet show run by a giant. i would be really embarrassed if i did something stupid, because i thought an audience was watching me.
It occurred to me when I was little - not sure if I actually *beleived* it as such - that everyone
else in the world might be a robot or something, conducting some sort of
fantastically elaborate experiment on ME, the only real human. It heartens me
to read that loads of other people thought this, too.

I used to believe that I was a robot or alien because I had not been circumcised.
I spent many hours convincing myself that the world was play acted for my benefit; that people would be milling around in whatever room I was about to walk into, and then spring into appropriate action when I would enter.
As an adult, when the movie "The Truman Show" was released with almost this exact plot (in my mind there was no show, it was just reality, and all the people weren't really actors, but more like automatons), I started reading reviews talking about 'this common childhood fantasy we all had of being the only real person in the world'.
So I went from great surprise that someone had written a movie about my childhood obsession, to shock that loads of people thought the exact same thing.
I used to think that all reality was a dream and that I was really in a science experiment sleepwalking everywhere I went. When I went school I was really in an abandoned school going through the routine while all of these scientists, that I couldnt see were watching me. :)
When I was around 9 or 10 years old I would go on trips from my small village to a nearby city with my family.
While there I would notice that many faces I would see looked somewhat like people I knew back in the village.
I used to have this fantasy--that I more than half believed--that the world I lived in was some kind of enormous experiment around me. So this bunch of people followed me around, disguising themselves so as to appear as different people.
Think of the 1998 movie "The Truman Show".
Quite an ego-centered fantasy...
When I was youmg, me and my three sisters would make a mess with our toys or whatever (as kids do). Mum would come in and say "It looks like a bombs hit it in here!" For years I thought she was saying "It looks like a bum's attic in here" Well, it made sense to me....
I convinced a friend that I had a pair of Starlight express rollerskates, that ejected sparks and coloured smoke, and I believe where also motorised and controlled remotely. He believed this even though he knew I couldnt rollerskate......
i used to think that there was another family just like mine in every country in the world, with a little girl just like me. so every day i would think that there would be me, the american kristen, going to school, eating dinner, brushing my teeth, reading a book, anything, and that in any other country in the world the other me was doing the same thing. i often wondered if we could just trade places, if i could go to china or somewhere for a day and be another me.
this principle also applied to mirrors- i was certain there was a backwards world in them as well.
When I was younger I believed that I was the only person who could think. Strange, I know. I'm not sure how I decided this but for quite a few years I thought everyone else in the world was like a robot or a puppet.
I thought there was an invisible rope tied around my waist, so if I ever turned one way, I always HAD to turn the other way so I wouldn't be tied up. This went on for a few years.
I thought that because I am called Elizabeth, I was the next Queen of England, and I only lived with my family because the royal family wanted me to have a proper upbringing.
My friends and I were playing with walkie-talkies on the roof of his shed and we were sure we had contacted Korea, because we interrupted a signal of someone else speaking an asian language. We were afraid we would start a war, so we went inside and watched tv instead.
I used to believe…
That my babmbi stuffed animal turned alive at night. my mom would leav half eaten carrots and celery and I thought Bambi ate them at night. I kept that belief until age 8.
I used to be absolutely convinced that everyone I had ever known or met had some sort of magical way of spying on me at all times, so I would lay in bed and make faces at the window, thinking that people were secretly seeing me through my window.
