When I was five, everytime I played "karate" with my little brother we would always speak in mock-Chinese. We really thought that was how they speak it. So on the first day of school I was delighted to find a Chinese person in my class. I went up to him and started speaking in mock-Chinese. This went on for days and I thought I was making progress - until it came to a point where he was so fed up that he just walked away and ignored me for the rest of the year.
I remember when I was about 6 or 7, my older sister was in the process of committing the United States' capitals to memory for school. She asked my dad if he would help her, and so I watched and listened as they listed off what sounded like far and distant lands. I believe it was when they came to Raleigh, the capital of... one of the Carolinas?... when I asked, "Dad, what language do they speak in Raleigh?"
i used tobelive "swear words" were "square words". A common mis hearing. But... id always picture a tetris style game ( green falling blocks, blue rim, black background) whenever i heard a "Square word"
I CAN'T BELIEVE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT THIS!!! I used to believe that l-m-n-o was one letter also. I laughed when I saw that some people thought l-m-n-o-p was a letter! (with the p). What a weird thing!! It's that "darn" song we all learn. The "ABC" song needs to be re-written to clarify those letters!! HaHa!

When my dad was watching TV, sometimes people would start to curse, but then that bleeping noise would blank them out. I asked my father, and he said that the people on TV were saying naughty things. The next day, at school, we had a fire drill. The alarms were really loud and made an almost identical noise the the TV edits. I kept asking my teacher who said naughty things, which she thought was hilarious.
I was introduced to the idea of "soldiers" before "shoulders". The soldiers I knew wore red tunics, bearskins and marched in tight formations. When I found out, via a sweater that my grandmother had knitted for me, that the area between my neck and the top of my arm was in fact a "soldier" I was mystified. For some time I couldn't get the image of a small soldier in bearskin and red tunic sitting on each of my shoulders out of my mind and reasoned that this must've been the origin of the word.
I couldn't understand why no-one had invented a word for something that isn't big but at the same time isn't small so I used to express the concept with the word "little-big" or "big-little". It was a revelation to me when my mother asked me go to the shops for a medium sliced loaf (of bread) and I discovered that someone somewhere had actually solved the problem that was perplexing me at the time.

When I was four years old my big brother and sister taught me the horrible swear word 'flabbergasted' and delighted in my saying it over and over. Then they told me they were going to tell Mom that I had been swearing, but convinced me the best option would be for me to tell on myself. Which I did.
33 years later they still bring that one up.

When I was about 5, My mom and dad took me to my grandmother's house (she only speaks spanish), So I asked my mom "How do you laugh in spanish?"
I remeber believing that all letters could be "spelt" - if it made a sound, it could be spelt into a comeplete word - like "W" would be "double-yew" So I asked my mom how to spell "k". she replied "K". I got angry with her and said "No, how do you SPELL it?" She said, again "K" this argument went on for quite a while. ^_^
I was an exchange student in America from Germany, and in Germany they taught us that the word you use for an eraser was also called a rubber. So you can imagine my surprise when I found out another meaning for a rubber when I asked the boy behind me in my math class if I could borrow his!

When I was younger (first grade I think) I came home from school one day and randomly asked my mother "Mommy, is 'duh' a swear?" All I remember is her replying "Yes, dear" and me running off to pray for God's forgiveness for all the times I had said duh. I also urged all my friends to do the same in school the next day. Then, about a week later, during lunch, we asked an older boy something, to which he replied "No duh". Needless to say, we avoided that boy for the rest of the year.

When my mother was little, her mother had a bunch of friends who swore a lot. As a result, she swore all of the time. Me being her daughter, she didnt want me repeating all of the words she said; so she made up a word; Hungy Gungee. I thought this word was an actual swear until i screamed it at the teacher in school one day, and she asked why i kept yelling that. I must have been like 10.

When i was little, I was so jealous of people who could speak a different language. Even though i had enough with my own, I decided i was going to learn one. However, after watching tv and not being able to follow along with people and not far enough along to read sub-titles, I decided I was going to find a language most people didnt know and pretend i could speak it. I still think this is a clever idea even though i did make one mistake. I waited to hear a languge on tv and then went to my mom and said, "Mommy, I can speak ENGLISH!" Of course, she laughed and said, "I know." I kept insisting she didnt until finally i broke out in jibber jabber then saying, "There. See? There's english!"

Whenever someone said the word "Grades" it reminded me of grapes and suddenly I would start craving them. I guess they both sound similar.
Also, when I was little about 5 or 6, my dad had chocolate and told me to share it with my sister. Since then, whenever I hear the word share or shares it reminds me of chocolate.
I always thought that the numbr 100 was the biggest number and that it was the last one. So, when I knew all my numbers up to 100, and then was informed that I was sadly mistaken, I thought I will never memorize all those numbers. It would take years.

I used to believe that in the alphabet song, L-M-N-O-P were one letter, pronounced elemenohpee. I even remember asking my mom once "what letter is elemenohpee?"
