When I was young (about 3), I learned how to pronounce simple words from Sesame Street. They would sound out each letter of a word and then say the whole word. From this, I believed for a short time when you said a new word, you always had to say "buh...buh..." before it (sounding out the letter B), as in buh...buh...hand.

I use to think a whore was big scary monster, like phantom of the opera. I finally figured out I was wrong when I called my mom one. I guess I thought she was Horror-if-fying.

since I live in CANADA i used to think that every country had two offical languages and that every primary school student had to lear both of them like I had to learn french and english.
I used to believe that no matter what language any other person spoke i thought they would understand me if I spoke my english slower! Of course i have now found out that that isnt the case.

This wasnt me (it was me and my uncle wen dey were little)
My Uncle we are talking bout here is the youngest out of 4 boys. And my mum was the youngest out of 3 girls. Well since my 2 aunties were too busy in their lives my mum was stuck looking after him. My uncle would swear 24/7 even if my grandad threatened to take off his belt and smack him with it across the back side! so one day my mum said "I know an even worse word u can use, its worser than f**k, its worse than sh*t. Can u guess wot it is?" so of course he thinks about it, so with that my mum says "dont tell anyone!" he nodds his head, and my mum goes "........Turnip!" Of course my uncle being young, immature and gullible every time he wanted to call someone a nasty rude word he would always call them a turnip...this happened until he realised that turnip was a vegetable not a swear word.

Remember when comic books used to use the word "phut" as a sound effect for a dull pop? I could never figure out why grownups were so horrified when I said it out loud....

When I learned that a piece of glass that you look through was called a window, I naturally assumed that a piece of glass you see your reflection in was called a mirrow. It never made sense to me that the words for such similar things had different endings. Still doesn't.

Well, my grandmother on my mother's side sometimes used Japanese words, since she knew Japanese before any other language. She used to talk to my mom and she'd say something along the lines of "That (thing here) is so kawaii" Kawaii in Japanese is "cute". I didn't understand that until later, but I did understand that "Kawai" was the brand name of the same grandmother's piano. I started crying when she said that I was kawaii, because I thought she would make me into a piano. I was about five.
I was watching the news with my mom when I was about 6 or 7, and heard about a woman getting raped, or "ranked", as I heard it.
A few weeks later at a boyscout meeting, we were given patches for our uniforms saying Rank ??. After the meeting I built up enough courage to pull thee scout leader aside and tell him i wasnt going to wear the patch because ranking someone was very bad, as my mom told me. I still remember the puzzled look on his face.

In our seventh grade science class while reading a chapter in our books out loud, when one person was asked to read a paragraph about squids, he said "A squid has ten 'testicles' while an octopus has only 8." He was supposed to say TENTACLES!!! The whole class burst out laughing!

Although I don't remember this, my mother swears that when she was teaching me the alphabet, she could not get me to say W, X, Y and Z...
I would say double-me, X, Y and Z.
She loves to bring this up at family gatherings just to anoy me.

ok i am a white gurl 2 start off with. Now i have always eavesdropped on my mother as a child (which i still am, so i still do) and i picked up a lot of stuff. And i noticed that she always whispered the word "black" when she was talking about somebody that was well, black. I actually believed untill i was 12 that this was a repulsive thing to call someone because my mother would always whisper this word. It actually ended up bieng a word in my crossword puzzle for health(dont ask) and i couldnt get the answer because i thought it was a curse!! I yelled at my mother so much for that one!

My sister was always playing computer battleships when I was little. I'd learned my numbers and my letters, and I was looking at the screen one day. I soon came to believe that every number had to be partnered with a letter, otherwise it would just be rejected.
I came home from school one day with a notice about Picture Day. I asked my mother if I could get a new pair of shoes. She asked me why I needed new shoes. I said that I wanted to look nice for Picture Day. She said nobody would be able to see my shoes in the picture. I pointed to the flyer and said "Look, it says right here, 'We will be photographing the entire student body.'" I don't think she stopped laughing for a solid two minutes.
