Cursive didn't have anything to do with the normal alphabet. You just started with something that looked like a letter and scribbled a little.

I'm from Texas, originally, so you can imagine some of my family has a southern accent/drawl.

In elementary school, we had spelling tests where the teacher would call out ten words and we would try to spell them to see if we knew them by sound, alone.

I turned in my test one day and the teacher asked to see me a little later when she was grading. I'd written "hell" on my test sheet, and she asked why, and I told her, "That's what you said!", and then proceeded to say "hail", thinking of the southern drawl pronunciation for "hell".

She about killed herself laughing.

When I was little I thought that everyone said spaghetti wrong. I said pasghetti instead; my family humored me and said pasghetti as well. This went on until I was about 7 or 8. I was a weird kid...

I am 13 years old and I remember when I was learning to read I thought that everyone was making the words up and it was one big practicle joke to try to convince me into beliving them and that the letters were just squiggles that everyone said were letters. When I refused to listen to my teacher in Kindergarden and told her that she was lieing about the letters and words then as I procided to throw a tamtrum I was sent early for nap time so she wouldn't have to put up with me. I WAS AN ODD CHILD...

i used to believe that the number 4 was female, 5 was male and 6 was female.
4 and 6 would fight over 5 because they were so jealous of each other for being right next to him

When I was young my uncle told me that "the Japanese read backwards" (Meaning actually that they read from right to left.) I took this to mean that to speak Japanese I just had to learn to speak backwards. Like, sdrawkcab is Japanese for backwards... I practiced for a while, then met a Japanese kid who said that's not how it works. I don't trust my uncle very much anymore. ;-)

I thought for years that the name of john travolta was johntra volta

Before I could read, I would play with my mother's typewriter. I understood the concept that letters formed words but thought that ANY combination of letters would spell out a word. I would type a jumble of letters, take the paper out of the typewriter, and handing it to my parents, ask them what it said. Of course, I always spelt out something very profound.

I learned in 3rd grade that (missus) was spelled Mrs. I went home and bet my older brother a "million dollars" that mississippi started with Mrs. I lost and he never let me forget that!

When i was kids and learning to speak english, we used to recite the poems in our books one line at a time and make it look like we are conversing in fluent english to the kids from other schools. Funny!

one time in school, aged about seven, i was looking at the 11 year old kids' work on the wall. i always had a knack for spelling and i was disgusted to spot spelling errors in the work on the wall. i thought children of that age should really be able to spell perfectly, they'd had long enough to learn...

When I learned that 1 times 0 is 0... And that 2x0 is 0... and that 3x0 is 0... Naturally, I concluded that ANY number multiplied by ANY other number is 0. Genius.

I was absolutely _crushed_ when I learned that there were numbers greater than ten. I had believed for... well, for months, I suppose (:-) that 10 was the biggest. When my mom broke the news, I cried for the rest of the day.

I used to believe that the letters L, M, N, and O were one letter while singing the alphabet song. "...H-I-J-K-LMNO-P..."

I used to believe…

When we were learning the alphabet at school the teacher used to make us sing the alphabet song, where the letters "L,M,N,O,P" are all sung quickly together. For some reason I thought that we were singing "elemental P!" What's most odd is that i knew the word "elemental" before I understood the alphabet!

My mother has told me about a time when I was just starting to figure out that letters made words. She said that one time she saw me pointing to the word on the back of the toliet and I said, "E-L-G-E-R. Potty!" I thought Elger (the name of the toliet manufacturer, spelled potty.
