I grew up not far from the local train tracks. My friends and I would lay on the slope leading up to the tracks and would count the cars as they went by. I remember going home one day and asking my Grandmother where Capa City was. It was written on all of the box cars. We got out the altas and searched, but found nothing.
Not long after that, we got stuck in the car at the RR crossing. When the box cars starting rolling by, I showed her where it said they were all from Capa City.
She began to laugh so hard, she had to turn around to go home and change her pants.
What I was reading as Capa City, was actually "capacity"...as in maximum volume.....Ooooooohhhh!
Hey, I was 7!

I believed that there were two n's in the alphabet. I asked my teacher in kindergarten because to me it went... L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y *N* Z (because of the AND Z).

When I was about 4 and in pre-school, I didn't know how to say "truck" and would say it as "fuck." Well, every Friday my grandpop would pick me up from school and I would stay at my grandparents house for the weekend. Everytime it was dismissal and everyone would go outside to go home, I would see my grandpop's truck and yell excitedly, "Papa's fuck! Papa's fuck!" Everyone would CRACK up. I mean, I didn't know any better. And better yet, my grandpop had those roll-up handles to close the windows and since I a little too young to operate those rolling handles, instead of saying something like, "close the truck's window" I would say "Fuck the window."
Kids will be kids!
I used to hear grownups say "So-and-so is really struggling to make ends meet", but I thought they were saying ends MEAT - the cheepest, yuckiest cut of beef there ever was. I always felt so sorry for the poor people who couldn't even afford to make ends meat.

When I was in preschool, if we couldn't go to an area it was "Off Limits." Me, not knowing the word "off" in that context, and not knowing what the word "limits" meant. I thought it was some German term, like Auflimetz, that mean "Don't Go Here"

My mom was a high school English teacher. She used to have a book in the house entitled, "Writing With a Purpose" and for some reason I thought it read, "Writing with a Porpoise". I couldn't understand why she was having her students study about Porpoises in English class.

When I was about 9, I had a 2 year old baby sister and a few months old baby brother. Sometimes, I would play with them and then they gurgle and mumble stuff and look at each other. I used to think they were communicating in some secret baby organization language, and it made the most sense to me. I asked myself: "How come I don't remember those times when I was a baby?".
Then I came to the conclusion that they had a secret Baby organization in some base and that they were members of it. I thought that when members got too old, they erase any memory of the organization.
From then on, I started interrogating my baby sister and brother whenever my parents would leave them alone with me.

When i was a kid, i asked my grandfather how the heat in our house worked. He showed me the baseboard heater in the kitchen and said something that i heard as "the heating elephants inside". Eventually i found out he was saying "elements" but for a long time i had imagined little tiny elephants walking around inside the heater to make it warm. i spent about an hour that day sitting next to the heater trying to look inside it and see the elephants.
