I used to think that the letter W had a sound that you'd repeat U two times. I was three and would pronounce, for example, watermelon: "U-Umelon". (double u...?)

A certain cousin of mine tends to be quite stubborn. When she was about five years old (and I in my late teens), she was absolutely certain that there was no way I could know how to read, as I'd never "went to school." (My parents chose to home-school me.) Eventually, I managed to set her straight and even tease her about it a couple of times.

My uncle is an Eskimo. While here in the lower 48, he was asked to recite the numbers in "eskimo". Since he was put in the white schools and was punished for speaking his native language, he never retained the language. So someone out there believed him when he started counting.... one-uk, two-uk, three-uk.......

I used to believe that 'prosecuted' as in 'trespassers will be prosecuted' meant electrocuted. I always thought that it was so unfair, and that they should at least give you a chance to explain.

When I was about 4 or 5 I saw a documentary on the history and mythology of Ireland on tv. So I naturally assumed Ireland was a place where warriors and unicorns and leprachauns went after we got rid of them, and if I learned to speak Irish, they'd let me live with them.
At age 20, I first visited Dublin. And was actually a little disappointed. Then again, I still don't speak Irish, so who knows?

I used to believe that all languages were based off of english. One day, i saw a japanese girl reading a book in japanese and told her: "you japanese people must be really stupid cuz our language looks nothing like that!" she was very upset and i told her that it wasnt my fault i was american, i was just more special. then she got really mad!

i believed at 9 years of age that swear words were new. i didn't realize they were age-old, but rather thought someone was just now coming up with these 'bad words'.

i was babysitting this naughty boy who was about six i think. his dad was busy doing something near by but needed to have someone watch his son. so after running around for a while with him i got tired and wanted to have a little fun. so i told him that "hippo" was a bad word and to never say it. of course, being six, he was delighted to have been told a word not to say. so the next thing he did was run over to his dad and repetedly say "hippo! hippo! hippo!" his dad looked at him very confused and i just stood there laughing histerically. oh, hippo.

When i was little i used to think that English was the only language that made any sense and that everyone else just

I remember that when my friend's sister was really little she thought that the pointer finger was the "swear finger", so she would always start counting with her middle finger.

I seem to remember never realizing that "frustrated" was spelt with that first R. Until I was about 15 or 16, I said "fustrated." How that happened and never was corrected, I do not know.

I used to think 'crap' was a cuss word. And a girl at my gymnastics class would always say 'crap' whenever she fell. I always wondered why she didn't get in trouble.
