When I was in third grade, my friend's older sister convinced me that when some one said 'BS' it meant ' boloney sandwich'.

I got the word hobo confused with homo. So one night years ago, my family and I were walking out of a restaurant, and my dad said "Let's walk the other way, there's a hobo asking people up the street for money". I yelled "Where's the homo? I want to see him! Why don't you like homos dad!?". Haha, I look back and laugh.

as a child i firmly believed that accents counted as languages. so for the first eight years of my life i spoke Derby and if anyone asked me if i spoke English i would deny it compleatly! i was always amazed at my cousin who could speak both Derby and English lol

My parents were huge hypocrites growing up. We kids were told profusely not to swear and do other things they called "ungodly". However, we learned quite a few curse words from Dad. When my brother was a teenager, one day he remarked about something or other: "that sucks." Well, my parents got all over him for it, and I couldn't understand why. I had never heard the expression: "that sucks", and i thought my brother had been mumbling about socks. I thought my parents had misheard him, thinking he'd said the word "fuck", and i tried to stand up for him, telling my parents that he'd only been talking about his socks!

When I was like, 4 up until they moved out, my great auntie and great uncle lived in this house with another house behind it. My great aunt always told me to never go near the other old woman's house because she would 'bite your head off.' I always thought she meant it literally, but now I know what she really meant

I used to believe…

You know how adults sometimes spell out words that they don't want kids to understand? Well whenever grownups did this around me I could usually figure out what they were spelling, and so the point of doing this was pretty much defeated. So I just thought spelling words was a Thing adults did sometimes, and I would spell random words as I was speaking sometimes in an attempt to sound grown-up.

I used to believe…

When I was little I'd hear my dad swearing on the phone but I thought it was some cool grown-up language he'd made up. There was this one word that sounded the coolest and I thought it was a driving direction or something. So one day I was in the car with my mom and I asked her which way it meant. She looked at me wide-eyed and asked me where I learnt it.

until i was about 10 i thought a dozen is about the highest possible number - when i learnt that it is only 12 i was dead disappointed, i nearly cried, it was such a big shock ;)

I used to think that people only heard different languages differently, but didn't speak them differently. I thought all of the same words were coming out of our mouths, but my ears just couldn't hear the words right if they were coming out of a foreign person.

I used to think that if only you listened closely and intensely enough you would be able to understand any language automatically without learning it. I remember on holiday a German girl came up to me and started talking. She ran away after I had spent a few minutes leaning towards her , hands behind my back with an intense look of concentration on my face.

I use to believe 'brainwashing' was when someone cut open your head and poured water in to wash your brain!.
