I used to believe…

Before i could write i thought that writing was just scribbles that i diddn't know how to read yet. I would draw pages and pages of squiggly lines and give it to mum and ask her to read out to me what i had written. She gave up trying to explain and humoured me.

I used to believe…

When I walked to kindergarten, I passed a building with a sign that said "Office"

I firmly believed that the office had a floor of ice, and that the sign was a warning to stay off of that ice!

There was also a sign that said "Notice" and I believed that the sign told you there was no more ice.

I was almost afraid to say "cinimon bun" or "cinimon toast", because, to me, it almost sounds like you're saying S.O.B.

I used to believe the word(s?) 'make-believe' was supposed to be 'maple leaf'. I always said 'I watched my favorite cartoon today. But its just a maple leaf story'.

I used to believe…

This one girl in my spanish class thought that "Caliente" was a bad word for some reason ... she would go around screaming "CALIENTE! CALIENTE! You're a caliente"

hall of fame

i used to believe that when people said "pardon me" that they were actually saying "part of me". i could never figure out what that was supposed to mean.

I'm from Finland, so my mother language isn't English. In Finnish we pronounce actually the same way we write (for example we pronounce Finland's capital Helsinki like Hell-sin-key and kiikari (binocular) little bit like key-car-e). I only knew that in English you write differently than you pronounce, but i thought that it works like A is E, T is V, B is D and so on. so i thought that people who speak english just change letters in their head and then pronounce it like people in finland. I'm not sure when I figured out how it really works but at least at school when I started to study English. I hope you understand my explanation :)

I used to believe…

When I was little I thought the word 'bastard' was just something you called your friends like 'buddy' or 'pal' because my dad called all his friends and brothers 'bastard', like "Hey, bastard how's it going?' When he took me back to my mom's house after his weekend with me I said "Hey bastard!" to her so happily.Mom was convinced my dad set me up to this and wanted to kill him.

I used to believe…

hahahah i am 15 years old, almost 16. my friend melanie is a little older than me, i believe she is 16.....she has always had the toughest time with words; not a really widespread vocabulary.

she calls me up the other day and tried to ask me for advice about something. and she said: "YOU KNOW, THIS WHOLE THING IS ASSINYING"

like ass-in-eye-ing. she got it mixed up with assinine. i guess she thought people were saying assinyin'. ahahaha

I used to believe that while 'a couple' meant two, that 'a few' meant three. I thought this at least until I was 8 years old.

Even more embarassingly it was my younger brother who clued me into the fact that 'a few' didn't have to be just three. I argued with him that it even made sense since the word 'few' had three letters in it. Of course, I hadn't considered that 'couple' had more than two letters.

At any rate, my mother settled the argument.

I used to believe…

Once I had a most embarassing experience as a kid at my big sister's school at a game one time. And it was a booboo that many people wouldn't let me forget for a LONG time. I referred to some cheerleaders "waving their tampons around". That was because I was inclined to confuse the words "tampon" and "pompom". I even still do confuse them occasionally.

I always thought the saying was 'for crying allowed' instead of 'for crying out loud'.

I used to believe that a "Rear Admiral" was someone who watched scantily dressed people (like on a beach, for example) and admired their butts.

I used to believe that your "rude finger" meant I hate you. So when we were angry at the teacher, we would all put up our rude finger when she wasn't looking.

I used to believe…

Before I was old enough for school, my folks had taught me that "pee" was a bad word...so whenever I had to recite the alphabet, I said those middle letters as "L, M, N, O, bad word". (By the time I hit first grade, thankfully, the teacher set me straight...)

Til I was about 8 I had no idea what swearing was, someone told me that this boy in a movie swears a lot. I told my friend that this boy had sex (I had a vague idea of what that was).

I used to believe…

When my best friend's brother was around 7 or 8, he drove their whole family crazy with his endless chitter chater about anything and everything, so they him that he only had a certain amount of words he could use in his lifetime and if he went over that limit he'd never be able to speak again. Just imagine the stillness that ensued after this episode.

I used to believe "retro" was a vulgar word. It's odd now especially since I'm a retro gamer.

I used to believe…

When I was 10, I visited my aunt and uncle in the city for a week, they lived in a condominium. Back at home My mom and I were walking back home from Church and I told her "When I grow up I want to live in a condom!" My mom explained the correct word 'condo'. But she never did say why she blushed when I pronounced it wrong.
