I used to think there was one "fundamental language", and English couldn't be it because of the strange grammar and stuff (and I don't know how to speak any language other than English!)
I used to believe…
English was my first language ... but until the age of five or six, I thought that everyone spoke it. The first time I heard someone speak a foreign tongue, I stared at them in disbelief until my mother told me about languages. But the idea of someone not speaking English was so alien to me - because the languages I overheard were utterly incomprehensible to my ears - that I figured that everyone speaking a foreign language simply MUST be at least thinking in English. They must be translating back and forth in their heads even as they speak German or Japanse or whatever, because how ELSE could they understand that strange gibberish coming from their mouths?
I immediately felt bad for them and thought I was lucky because I only had to think and speak English instead of worrying about translating words from foreign languages into English in my head.

In fourth grade my friend and I thought we were cool and swearing was the "cool" thing to do. So we would yell at her dog "Get off me you f*ck!" and use swears totally wrong everytime her mom would try and yell at us she would end up laughing.

So, a day or so later I wanted to sound imporant and we were fishing and I was going to try and catch the minnow out of the bucket and it kept slipping out of my hand so i shouted///"You backstard!" and They got a good laugh at my misunerstanding and then explained I shouldent say that word...

In Spanish Class in kindergarten, the Spanish teacher taught us a song about "Up and Down". The lyrics were simply "ariba... abajo...", but when he said "abajo", I thought he was saying "a bottle". I raised my hand and told the teacher that my little brother drank from a bottle. He ignored my remark, clearly having no idea what I was talking about.

My fianace grew up around his father and cars and always talking about them, looking at them, etc. One night I noticed that he was using the word "deluxe" in the wrong context, and asked him what he thought it meant. When he responded that it mean "bad" or "worse then the rest" i was baffled that he had the exact opposite meaning of what it really meant. I asked him why he thought that. He said that because in cars the "deluxe" version is always the worse of the models. You have stuff like "supreme" and all the super decked out models. Than the base model they still call something nice like "deluxe" even though it's the bottom model. So he thought it meant crappy version.
I used to think that "infared" could be pronounsed either "infa-red" or "inffrared" (pronounced in-frared(like in-prayer-ed with an f insted of a p )
Now i know there is no such word as "infrared"
I still think infared looks like infrared though.
I was raised in Florida, but my mom is from new england and they always drop "R's" and add them in different places when speaking. Like car is pronounced just "ca". Well, until I was 9 or so I thought that "idea" was actually "idear" with an "R" on the end. When my friend pointed out the truth I was so embarassed. My teachers must have thought I was a complete idiot. It was totally my mothers fault.

When my little brother's class teacher asked him to recite the two times table as a punishment for talking in class, he stood up and said:
''Duh-de-duh-de-duh, Du de du de du, de-du-de-duh-duh...''
''Stop!'' screamed his class teacher. ''WHAT was THAT?''
''I can remember the tune,'' said my little brother, ''but I can't remember the words''.

When I went on my first trip to America aged 6 (I'm from England), on the plane ride there, I flashbacked to a previous trip to France, remembering how everyone spoke a different language and I couldn't watch the TV as I couldn't understand it. I paniced, I asked my mother 'What language do they speak in America? What if we don't understand it?' to which I was informed they speak English, like us, and that many of the cartoons I enjoyed such as Rugrats were in fact American. I always wondered why they had funny accents.
